Irritating things that your parrot does?

Postby JaydeParrot » Sun Apr 06, 2014 4:30 am

Dunno if there's a post up like this up yet, just figured I'd ask people if they want to list their type of parrot and unpleasant irritating things it does to help put people off thoughtlessly buying a parrot:

SENEGALS:

My female senegal moves faster than my male so will usually get to a newly placed fruit bowl (in the cage) first. Sometimes she decides she doesn't like the look of any of it, throws it all out (before the male has much of a chance to look) and screams for me to bring in something else, :).

Though very rare now, if the male decides that he's really unhappy, he has been known to grab my thumb, bite down harder and harder and start to do a sawing motion with his beak, causing me to have to pry him off with the other hand- He's very rarely drawn blood through doing this but still... Ouch!

Though usually quite quiet, my Sennies will scream if something isn't right e.g.- cage top isn't open when people are in the room, not enough food in one of the bowls, I've missed their bedtime by ten minutes and they want the cover on so they can go to bed, I've missed their wake up time and they want the cover off so they can do their morning routine, or just because they're bored. They get louder and louder if you're in the same room and you try to ignore them. Personally I think it's good thing because I'd rather they tell me something's wrong rather than just suffer in silence. But still, escalating loud noises can be quite unpleasant, :).

Anyone got any irritating/unpleasant problems that comes with the joy of having a parrot?

Not irritating but, of course, there are some things that I wish did not happen like the very loud cockatoos evening calls or their chewing anything in sight, or the fact that I have to watch the male amazons like a hawk during breeding season but they are normal things and need to be accepted when you make the commitment to live with parrots.

My Green Cheeked Conure likes to surgically slice (seemingly delicately) on the front of my neck, making it feel like a tiny scalpel is looking for the slightest imperfection to remove (like a skin tag last week). He also likes to chew and gnaw ('beaking' as we like to euphemize it) on other parts of my arm, hand or ear, though this is only on occasion throughout the day.

I am trying to work out how best to deal with beaking. It has only gotten out of hand, so to speak, on a few occasions, but I do not want it to ever get worse.

As soon as I come home, Luna calls to me continuously. When I go downstairs to make my tea, I can still hear her. She doesn't stop until I let her out of her cage. I like having eaten first before letting her out, as sometimes she'll try and steal my food and will preen on my shoulder while I try and eat. I would get feathers in my food.

My little delight here :gcc: (holding him now)

Just loves to scream whenever we run the vacuum, and will not stop till he is picked up!
Let alone he only bonds with me and no one else and will nip other people.(he is getting better at this)
Not to mention he does his business in his water bowl, making us change it constantly.
He takes one bite of a fruit and then throws it on the floor.
I love him to death though!

My Blue-headed Pionus Penny seems to either be obsessed with buttons, or want to see me naked. Whenever I wear a shirt with buttons or a zipper, she goes nuts and tries to unbutton/unzip it ASAP. When I close the buttons/zipper again, she growls, and starts over. I really don't know why she does this, but I've started wearing clothes without buttons or zippers during the day when she's out, it's fun for a while but when I wanna train her, talk to someone, study and so on, her stripping my clothes off does get kind of annoying

Also she wants to preen my eyes, which isn't too comfortable! It's super cute when she preens my cheek, ears and so forth, but my eyes.. Nope, I'm not that brave

EDIT: I forgot to mention, she also wants to chew on any new thing I present to her. I guess it's a good thing that she's not scared, flying away from new things. It makes it very easy to introduce new toys to her. But some things are just not meant to be in a bird's beak, like knives, screwdrivers and so forth  I think there's a line where curiosity is very hard to tell apart from stupidity.

My Corsair :meyers: starts screaming for me when she hears the garage door open, and doesn't stop until I come in to talk to her.

Lately she has taken to landing on heads and leaving "gifts"(we are working on this-even shoulders are better). One of my family has a phobia about flying things approaching his face, and wants nothing to do with her, but she keeps trying to "make friends", by landing on his head.

My Grey LOVES getting into mischief. She is also a big chewer, so I have to try to not wear nicer clothing when she's chillin' on my shoulder.

Emmi's most irritating habit is to cut my hair ties. She's quick about it too and I never know when it will happen because she stays on my head happily for a long time. Then snap! My hair falls.

Another thing...I don't understand her obsession with biting feet. She's never been stepped on or almost stepped on, in fact they don't even need to be on the ground. I will never forget a few months ago when my husband had just had surgery. He was sleeping on the couch and I had left the room for a moment to do something and here comes Emmi...Then I heard him scream. I come running in to see his foot up on the air with her hanging on by her beak and him trying desperatly to grab her while not being able to sit up. I got her off and she immediately starting dancing like she had completed the ultimate task. There is no napping while Emmi is around!

:gcc: <~~~~ Trouble!

This made me lol!

My parrot does't really do anything that irritating :s I think the worst thing is when he does a funny clucking noise on top of his cage/stand - I have always assumed this is an amazon thing for attention but I don't really know why he does it. He certainly doesn't do it if he's chilling with me on the sofa/ bed/ desk/ in the shower. It's not a particularly loud or demanding noise, it's just irritating :P
