Buying a new African Grey, with previous sun conures

Postby Hamzah_khan » Sun Apr 06, 2014 8:53 am

I am buying an african grey, and i was wondering if i have sun conures from before will it pick up only their voices or will it be able to clearly also pick up our works aswell? I used to have an indian ring neck who talked well and then we bought the sun conures and it started to mimic them and the words we taught it slowly became more unclear and chirpy. Will the same happen with the african grey or will it still be able to talk clearly just as other african greys that are alone?

LOL - How do you know the African gray will talk? Not all of them do, you know... But, even if it does, how could anybody tell if it's going to pick up the other birds' vocalizations? We don't have a crystal ball. Besides, if the only reason you are getting a gray is for their ability to talk, you are getting it for the wrong reason.

I do have a crystal ball, in fact I have 3 of them, but I think I need to get them repaired or I just don't know how to use them. They seem to work like my parrots and their talking, you just never know.

We all get under each others skin every once in a while, that is pretty much normal with any type of relationship or interaction.
Pajarita cares very deeply about all these birds, even though she does not own them all herself she is just trying to look after the welfare of the birds and it is why she takes the time to try to answer peoples questions about their birds. So you don't like her manner and that is cool but don't throw out the answer just because you don't like the package.

No one can tell if a given bird will talk at all, much less what it will like well enough to repeat. If it likes the way you say something well enough it will sound mostly like you, if it prefers the way another bird says it then likewise it will sound more like that other bird. No one can answer your question any better than that.

There are some of us who believe that if all a person is after in getting a bird is its ability to speak or to do tricks than that person really doesn't care enough about the bird itself and time and time again it does appear that this is true. Think about it.

Well, it's true though - while African Greys have the reputation of being amazing talkers, not all will talk, and you don't buy a parrot because you want it to talk, you buy a parrot for love and companionship. Too many people buy a parrot and when it doesn't talk, they dump the bird. It's really sad. People who mention the fact that not all parrots talk do so because it's the truth and because many parrots are abandoned because of it.

That said, my own CAG talks and has a very large vocab, but she is also a rehome; she talked before I adopted her. If you want an African Grey that is known to talk, a rehome is what you want.

Lol I would never "dump" a parrot I bought lol. I'm buying it for thousands of dollars so why would I not love it. African greys are the most amazing parrots and I have always wanted one. I couldn't care less if it doesn't talk I was just wondering of my conures would affect it's ability of it does. Everyone in this forum just jumps to conclusions.

I suppose that it is true that some do, a lot of it is actually because some of them are the ones that end up holding the bag so to speak, when many others have dumped their birds after abuseing it. Some of the birds are abused so badly that they are totally insane, with no hope for recovery. I, myself, have a 14 yr. old Amazon who was abused for all of its life, until I got it and this bird is suffering from a total mental breakdown. The vast majority of the people who do this to the birds seem to express only concerns about the birds ability to talk or do tricks, nothing else.

I don't suppose that you would call your outburst and attack on someone who only has the birds' wellbeing at heart, to be jumping to conclusions or a bit overboard?

I would think that you need to clean up your own act before you start throwing stones, Don't you?

Anyway there is enough guilt to go around and not one of us have not ever made the same types of mistakes and we all can learn from this.

Not everyone here jumps to conclusions and not everyone attacks others over perceived slights, right or wrong. We all don't have to lower ourselves to this type of behavior, we all can do better than this.
