Only to attempt to clarify a term "psychotic ". The term psychotic while is a medical condition does not imply either behavioral or neurological as the causation can be either or as in many cases both. Nor does the term imply that the condition can or can not heal partially or wholly.

Going by the medical definition, although psychosis can be caused by trauma or disease, the 'behavioral' part of it is just a symptom. But, in reality, this is neither here nor there because plucking and self-mutilation are considered (at least, so far) as stereotypic behavior found only in captivity so it's always, one way or another, something that we cause.

Actually my clarification was an attempt to illustrate to the reader, with little to no medical background, that the person in your story was ,in fact using the term incorrectly. Also ,thus far, I have not found any cause for self mutilation or feather plucking that doesn't fall into caused or continued by the choice of humans to reject their responsibility. So, I believe we agree.
