Unusual behavior? Help ! ( video )

Postby Theodore » Sat Apr 12, 2014 3:21 am

Hi there, I am new to this forum !

Well, I have recently bought a parrot and I am a little bit worried about his behavior ( by the way, his name is Papa ). He has enough food, water and the temperature is just fine but he keeps doing weird things like twisting and spinning, as seen in the video below . Is it normal ? What should I do ? Thanks for trying to help, Papa will surely appreciate it . :senegal:

It appears to me that Papa is doin' what is normally referred to as "playing" :-)

I've got 2 bonded pairs at home, both of whom recently hatched a whoppin' grand total of 19 adorable healthy babies between 'em, so I do know just a lil' about these guys ;-)

I couldn't help but to notice that your birds furnishings are very limited. You might consider letting it have 3 to 4 toys in the cage to play with, a few toys outside to play with and some put away to change out once in a while. For the most part birds love their toys once they get used to them, some birds fear them when they first get them.

My dear, please don't take this the wrong way because I am not trying to offend you but the poor thing has a VERY small cage completely devoid of any enrichment except one single toy that will only make him hormonal! That's why he is doing what he is doing! He is going crazy in there. Please, please, please, get him a cage four o five times as big as that one (if money is an issue, look in Craig's list for used ones), fit it with natural tree branches for perches (the ones in there will end up giving him bumble foot) and put toys in there so he can entertain himself (they love to chew on dry yucca and it's not expensive at all if you buy the pieces and thread them together yourself) and, if you really love him, get him a companion.

Hi my name is Tanya and I'm all new here to this forum. I have a Ecleptis parrot who is about 1 years old. His name is Charlie I wanted to know why when I have visitors and friends over in the house does he squawk very loud and ear pearcing?? He only does it while my visitors are here and then when they leave he is all good again. Could someone please help me and tell me why he is doing this and how can I stop it. Thanks Tanya

The first thing that comes to mind is that he is sounding the alarm to warn you about unknown animals in the area. He is trying to protect his flock ( you ). The second is that he knows them and is saying hi and then joining in the conversation. Personally, I'd go with the first.

Me too. Parrots are flock animals and it has been determined that flocks always follow a certain structure with birds positioning themselves in the perimeter to act as guards or look-outs so the others in the middle can sleep, eat, preen, interact without worries (they actually take turns doing this and the ones in the outside sleep with only a part of the brain so they can 'catch' the danger -aren't birds just incredibly interesting creatures?!). I think he has nominated himself the 'watch bird' of the flock... smart cookie, isn't he?
