Molting? Worried about my Grey

Postby GreenWing » Tue Apr 15, 2014 1:35 pm

Please correct me if I am wrong, does a parrot have a molt twice a year? And what times of the year do they molt?

I ask because I think Chance may be molting as I'm seeing a few feathers here and there (not plucking, at least I don't think as her plumage is even) and the shed feathers have their shafts intact with some down feathers. The shed feathers are not in excess but I am seeing several feathers on the ground for the last few days.

It may be a good time to take her to the avian vet for a check-up since adoption.

Addendum: She is also not eating her dinner as ravenously (cooked organic quinoa with quinoa pasta and sweet potato for tonight). I am worried about my baby.

In their natural habitat in Eastern Africa they have two breeding seasons January and February and then again June and July. This is according to the World Parrot Trust. Nothing is said about molting, this is my first Spring with Kookooloo so I can't really say any more on this topic yet.

Thanks for the reply, Wolf,

Is Kookooloo molting at all?

Hmmmm.

Well I just weighed Chance, she is at about 434 to 437 grams (she was moving and the scale picked up those weights). Is this a typical weight for a female Grey? She is petite for a Grey...

I called the Avian Medical Center and am having her get a check up/physical. I am a little worried as she is not eating her dinner as ravenously, at least, from what I have noticed the last two days. Her droppings look good in color but were a little watery this morning.

Average adult weight for CAG 400 gram or 14 oz.
Average adult weight for TAG 320 gram or 11.2 oz.

Maximum adult weights for Grey Parrot is 418 to 526 gram or 13 to 17.2 oz.

This info from World Parrot Trust.
