Noooo! I never thought any shadows were cast- this topic remains bright and sunny!

But yeah, I had to chase this guy down after a lot of go-nowhere phone calls and funny numbers. But he had a lot of good advice to give us, the best one being- Flanders has had no sleep! We had his patterns all screwed up, so I think some of the docile behaviour is down to the fact he's more rested.

And you're telling me, I think everythings overpriced these days! Gah!

He is also not as confident now. The clipping will definitely make him more insecure, but it just might give you the time you need, and in time he will forgive you.

I am glad he is feeling more like himself and that you figured out he needed more rest (that's super important). Training helps but be careful you don't overdo it, just two 15 minutes sessions a day is good and, if he balks at it, stop it immediately or it becomes flooding.

Glad to hear Flanders is recovering!

I've had two different AVs volunteer to clip my bird's wings "for free", but that's when I'm already paying for the office visit. I did let them clip her talons.

He seems to have bounced back! We've even had a few tantrums and he's pulled out that piercing machine gun screech he does. He's eating, chewing, squeaking, snuggling and clicking like before now, but he's definitely more docile. I think all is forgiven, or at least getting there :D

Thanks for all the advice guys, and the training is going along brilliantly. He's more willing to stay on the finger rather than make a beeline for our shoulders now, all thanks to advice from the AV. So, even though it was a lot to get him clipped, the advice he's given us is priceless for us parrot n00bs.

Either I have entirely missed the boat, the dock and the entire boatyard or you had an entirely different conversation with the vet than you have had here with us. As far as I can see from your posts the whole reason for clipping his wings was because of your stove taking a while to cool down and that he was flying all around the new apartment you just moved to.
If I were a bird and was just moved to a new apartment, I would be checking it out too. But to me that is not a good reason to clip my wings for.

If you have to clip, only semi clip, remove two to three feathers on each wing, that way the bird can still fly somewhat and can still glide, but their flying is also restricted, personally I think a full clip is too dangerous for a bird, as they need to be able to fly away from danger, their legs aren't designed to run fast enough.

Hi all. can't tell you how reived i am to see these posts about cipping (sorry i have no l key. wonder why) Every other site i have visited so far, plus the pet store and... well.... everyone was saying that it was irresponsible not to clip. It was the one thing about owning a bird that I saw myself having a lot of trouble with, because I believe very strongly that if we are going to keep birds as pets we have to give that bird a happy and fulfilling life from the birds' perspective... imagining the world through their eyes. i just lost my ability to walk (my achilles) and i can tell you that it sucks.

lily just came to the realization that she has the ability to fly recenty... she had no one to teach her! poor thing! all those times falling to the ground, not realizing what she could do! so after a couple rounds of 'b52 bird' shes getting the hang of it. she is really working at getting control, which is hard because she is cipped. at least now if she really wants to go somewhere and i won't get up and take her, she can fly close enough to waddle over. the change in her with al this was an explosion of joy that lasted for an entire week... so i could definatey see how flanders was depressed.

i live in a place that is in many ways a dream for a flighted bird. all open, with 25 foot ceilings and cool places to land. i can't wait till lily has her wings, and it is a race to bird proof the place before she goes through her first molt. and get a cool tree. only the bathroom has a wal and a door. you said your place was all open too? i have been thinking about the stove for a while, and don't have the best soluti0n yet. at least nt withut major cnstruction. its my biggest problem because she is fascinated with what goes on in that kitchen.

the current working idea is to create a flexible screen out of thick fabric mesh and grommets, that you pull down over the stove while it is hot. it would have to be taught, so it would stop her before she was close enough to the heat and she could see it and land on it. its only a working idea now because then there is the potentia problem that the bird could get caught in the mesh and injure a foot or wing... so i would have to try it out and do some research. but clearly there has to be sme sort of barrier in pllace. somewhere.

The easiest solution is to return the bird to its cage when the kitchen is in use and until the stove has cooled to the touch. I doesn't cost anything either.

I am very glad you found us and that you also do not believe in handicapping an animal for your own benefit. I agree with Wolf. Although I would also look for a more permanent solution, it's easy enough to put the bird in its cage when you cook and until the stove cools off.
