GCC noises

Postby Wendy40 » Fri Jul 11, 2014 2:40 am

What sites can I go onto to listen to GCC noises so I know what Ozzie is saying or his mood etc?

He is proving to be such a massive delight at the moment and considering we have only had him for a week seems to have settled in and accepted us very quickly :D

While I don't have this species of parrot, it is my understanding that in general if your bird is being vocal, other than calling for you or screaming, that they are pretty much happy at the time. You would be better off watching your bird very closely so as to learn its body language if you wish to learn about its moods.
Look for both obvious and subtle differences in their eyes, feather position, bodily position as well as head and beak movements. These will tell you far more about your bird and its moods than its vocalizations will.

Hmmm, that's an interesting question but I have no answer for it because my GCCs never vocalized unless they were talking human or screaming for attention (which they stopped to do at around two weeks after arriving) so I have no experience whatsoever in this.

Wendy I have had mine for about two weeks, and they are fun. As for noises I would watch what he is doing and that will help you see want he is saying. When I come in to his room in the morning he will scream for about five minutes to say good morning. Then he has this chirping he does when he feels like he wants out. Andy has a bong ( I don't know if I spelled it ) perch that goes all the way down to the bottom of his cage and it has a bell on the end of it and he will lay upside down and grab the bell with his feet and beak and make a soft can of scream like he is just having fun. one thing I do is sit across from their cages and just watch and see what they do. hope this helps a little.

I know ollie so well now that I find it impossible to describe his moods, its almost instinctive in a way. I dont know if your familiar with the way budgies chat away to themselves but ollie does that when he is content, he sits on my shoulder fluffed up and we have little conversations lol.
when he is excited all the feathers are flat to his body and he does this same little purring chirp over and over, this usually happens at meals or if he is given a bath. Its like he has discovered the best thing ever.
those are the two easiest things to pick up on with ollie.

Its much harder to read when he isnt happy with something, this is something I cant really explain because the change in him is so subtle to start with, all I can say is I can sense the difference in him, its only when his tail fans out and he starts charging towards you you know he is really pissed. Ive learned to avoid letting it come to that the majority of the time though. If it gets to that point these days its cuz I havent been paying enough attention to pick up on the little signs....

honestly if you spend time just watching and listening you will pick it up fast enough though

Its great your bird is having fun but please be very careful of the boing, ive never seen one that the bell is of good enough quality and theres usually a big slit where the clapper is attached which a bird can easily get its beak stuck in, thats without the danger of the rope itself.

While I agree that parrot body language is more important than sounds, I find that parrots of every species are a fixture on YouTube, and you can search, or check out https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=green+cheek+conure+sounds+ for sounds.

By the way, Corsair enjoys watching and listening to parrots on youtube. Her favorites are her own species, but she seems fascinated by Disco the parakeet. :? I guess if you don't know the size a green budgie :budgie: looks sort of like a Meyer's parrot, :meyers: especially since most Meyer's have yellow on head and shoulders when they grow up.

marie83 Thanks I will keep and eye out for it I may just take out the clapper all together and just leave the bell part. I can see that it just might not be that safe. Thanks again :jenday: :gcc:

Just an idea for consideration but I bought. Couple of really good quality stainless bells and swap the ones that come on standard toys for them. They were expensive but since I can attatch them to any toy and they will last a long long time I consider it an investment.

Re: the noises, my GCC makes a trilling noise whenever he's particularly pleased. He'll do it randomly, when he sees my dad, is eating a fruit he likes, or after we get him out of his cage in the morning.

It's my favorite noise of his, and i'll roll my tongue to make the same noise back at him. :)
