new addtion to my bird room

Postby Tman007 » Thu Jul 17, 2014 8:05 pm

LOL Not a new parrot I just was fixing up the bird room I add new light5ing to the room full spectrum a fixture that holds two 4 foot lights. with CRI of 90 and KTemp of 6500 I have read studies on lighting the ones that experts did, not the ones that the bulb companies did. some say that 6500 is ok for birds So that's what I went with. 90 CRI a little low but close. I am we will see if that will help. Everything that I have read on here and else were says that it does help. I am trying to do the right thing for my birds. Once I get the room all done I will take a few pictures so you can see it. :gcc: :jenday:

Oh, sorry to pop your balloon but no, 6500 Ktemp is too high and no good :( . It makes the light too blue and this puts them in breeding condition. The Ktemp has to be a max of 5500 in the spring and summer and 5000 or so for the rest of the year.

There are four specifications when it comes to artificial light:

1. Intensity (this is the amount of light you get, the higher the wattage, the brighter the light will be but it also depends on the source because incandescent needs to be higher than compact fluorescent)

2. KTemp (from Kelvin thermodynamic temperature scale unit which, to us, means the actual color of the light with 'daylight' been 5600 and the 'whitest' light -higher gives bluer and lower gives redder light)

3. CRI (Color Rendering Index which measures how similar to sunlight are the colors under an artificial light - 100 is identical to sunlight but anything over 94 is good)

4. Spectral distribution (this is which colors are specifically emitted by the artificial light and in which proportion -think rainbow- unfortunately, consumers don't get this info from the manufacturers although it would be fabulous for us, birdkeepers)
