Couple of Newbee questions

Postby Bongoboy » Fri Aug 01, 2014 8:01 am

Hello

My name is Kieran and i am the proud new owner of a Black Headed Caique named Bongo!

while i am used to having parrots at home due to my family owning a Red Lored Amazon this is the first time ive owned a parrot myself.

its his second day home and hes 12 weeks old.
He is extremely tame and friendly already

Hes only a baby so some of my questions might just be me fussing but i wanted to get some oppinions

1. firstly He seems to love flying onto my head. if left on someones hand or perch without distraction he tends to make a beeline straight for my head. ( sometimes other but usually mine) once there he just seems to sit. Its quite funny to watch but from what i know of parrots the behaviour seems little odd maybe he wants to be high? What do people think.

2. Hes very clumsy. Its quite cute in a way he dosent lose his balance while standing still but his co ordination when climbing round his cage is sometimes a little off. is this just because hes young and in a new cage?

3. ive had a couple of days off since ive got him and while i try not to spend all day in the same room with him i have noticed that he keeps closing his eyes and standing on one leg (Sleeping?)
in the middle of the day it only seems to be for short periods at a time and then he off zipping round his cage again. Is this normal. is it because hes still very young or can i expect this even when hes older?

He has a avian vet appointment on Monday for an intial check but just wanted to see what you guys throught.

Thanks
Bongoboy

Parrots are prey animals and so naturally want to be up high and away from any potential predators. I personally don't like birds being in my hair (they've gotten caught in it before) so would tell them no, pick them off my head, put them on my shoulder and then give them praise for being on my shoulder. While it's completely up to you whether to put him off being on your head or not, I would personally advise against it for two reasons:

1. Strangers or people with long hair might not appreciate him flying to or being on their head.

2. It's very easy to forget your bird is on your head and walk through a door or under something without making room for the bird, depending on the speed you're moving at, the bird could be shoved off or killed.

Birds are much safer on shoulders as you can keep your eye on them and reason number two cannot occur.

I'm not sure about the clumsiness, it probably is because he's young, he won't be an adult for a few years so is still learning.

Sleeping with one foot in the air shows that the bird is really comfortable in it's environment :). All pet birds have short naps during the day so I wouldn't worry about it.

Since your bird is only twelve weeks old, you may want to start him on harness training, the younger the bird, the better they are about accepting the harness.

Michael has a very good harness training video on youtube, though from my experiance you may first want to put the harness on a teddy parrot if you have one, the harness can be a bit confusing the first time you use it and even the most patient of birds won't want to wait for too long while you try to figure out how to put the harness on.

Good luck with your new bird :).
