Safe to take a parrot to a pet store?

Postby JaydeParrot » Fri Aug 01, 2014 8:58 am

There are many pet stores around my area which don't sell birds (only pet rodents and rabbits which are all behind glass) I often take Cain around there and she's fine, you're not allowed to touch the rodents and rabbits so there's little chance of cross contamination.

I did wonder though If it's safe to take Cain to shops which do sell birds, I always wanted to see how she'd react to other non-senegal birds. The shop birds aren't allowed outside of their cages and if anyone here thinks it would be a bad idea I wouldn't touch a bird through the cage in case of cross contamination. I just wondered if it was fairly safe to take Cain into a pet shop to look at some for sale birds as long as neither of us touch the for sale birds?

I wouldn't. I don't take my birds anywhere. I believe it stresses them out and it's completely unnecessary.

Here's the thing about birds, pet stores and birds in pet stores, at least as I understand it.
I f you go to a pet store that has birds and the birds or some of them are not kept in a glassed in area, when you walk into the store you are at that point contaminated with anything that the birds may have as are any product that is in the store. If the birds are kept in a separate glassed in area, you don't know if they were put there after passing through the store, or how many people have been into the enclosed area and came out and handled the merchandise. This means that in all liklyhood the merchandise is contaminated. I think that you get the idea.
