Would a different harness colour affect chewing?

Postby JaydeParrot » Wed Aug 06, 2014 11:57 am

Hi, was wondering if anyone who has used different colour aviator harnesses could answer this question:

My Sennie Cain has happily chewed her way through two harnesses, the first was red and the second is black. She seemed much less bothered by the black one than the red (she destroyed the red in months, the black one after the same amount of months is still going, it's just a bit tatty).

She isn't chewing because she's upset or angry, it more to do with being bored after 45 mins or more of shoulder riding or because she's hungry/thirsty.

I was thinking of buying a new harness, in the UK the black harnesses are way cheaper than the green, but I was thinking of buying a more expensive green harness in the hopes that a harness similar to Cain's feather colour will confuse/put Cain off chewing as she'll have trouble differentiating the difference between her feathers and the harness.

I was wondering if harness colour had makes any difference to the amount birds chew and whether there's much point in me paying more for a green harness/ if I should just stick with the cheaper black harness?

Thanks, :).

There is no doubt that birds can see color and are affected somewhat by it in much the same way as we are, but I think that if you think that they couldn't tell the difference in the harness and their own feather based on color, you are forgetting things you should be aware of. Parrots see into the ultraviolet range of light, which means that they see things and colors that we don't even know exist. Try looking at a parrot under a black light and you will see what I mean.
Can the color affect their chewing, probably, but not because they can't see the color difference or because they are in any way confused.

I haven't seen any difference in price between the colours but then I haven't looked recently. The colour may have an impact but I would personally consider that last- especially as you might need to reintroduce him to a different coloured one

If your definitely sure the chewing isn't stress related then I would try some distraction- maybe a small piece of wood/paper to chew up on your shoulder instead (don't get fined for littering if cain drops it though :P), bring him down on your hand and talk/play/fuss/train/treat him/offer a drink etc for a bit before it gets to the point where he chews, maybe switch shoulders regularly.

I think some colors may provoke greater chewing. Colors similar to the bird blend a little better and dont evoke as much visibility as contrasting colors. For some birds it will make a difference while for others it wont. Once they are used to it, color shouldn't matter. Truman wears any color.

I don't think it's the color so much as the fact that, most likely, she is getting used to wearing one but 45 minutes is way too long for any bird to wear a harness, in my personal opinion. Have you tried taking it off sooner?
