senegal diet

Postby Rujvir_G » Tue Aug 12, 2014 7:23 am

Hi everyone, ive been learning alot from u guys, this week I got the pellets for my parrot, since I heard that its healthy. But my question is that can I mix it with seed diet, eg can I feed him pellets in the morning fruits while the day and bird food ( seeds etc. ) at dinner time ? Is that okay ? Thanks ! :)

Can you do it ? Yes, you can. Is it good for them to do it ? No, it is not good to do.

Both the seed mix and the pellets are both high in fats and proteins, and should be fed in limited quantities and only for dinner. Basically the pellets are the same as a seed mix that is finely ground, heated and then extruded in a long spaghetti shape and chopped into the pellets. They are meant to be fed in the same manner and provide the same things. The main difference is that a parrot can pick through its seed mix and it cannot do this with the pellet.

Feed the pellets or seed mix for dinner and whole grains and fresh fruits and vegetables for breakfast and through the day.

I keep a bird bath full at all times, and a spray bottle ready as well. If I think that they are getting too itchy then I spray them down. some of them take baths on their own and others need to be sprayed so it depend on the bird and its preferences.
Basically, I keep watch on skin condition as well as watching for any bare spots and if I don't see any bare spots and the skin looks good, I don't worry too much. I do make sure that they all get a bath on a weekly basis, well some more often.
