My Grey is out of her cage a lot but if for some reason she has to remain in it for a few hours longer than usual she is fine and doesn't react badly, but I do try to get her out for at least 3 to 4 hours per day, more if possible. She was plucked almost completely bare a year ago but is growing her feathers back pretty well now. So what you are telling me is doable, just take your time and give him a basic schedule and once he is comfortable with that then start shaking it up just a little bit here and there and as long as you go slow it should work out fine.
