I f you are hearing a lot about birds swallowing wood from the pet stores, then I would wager that it is in relation to people using wood shavings for bedding for their birds. and the greatest dangers from that practice are not splinters but possible impaction of the intestines or of the crop, as well as the dangers of toxicity. Most wood bedding material is made from cedar which is toxic to your bird. On the odd chance they don't use one made from cedar there is further dander that a baby bird may learn to ingest wood because of food that drops into the bedding and they eat some of the wood trying to get the food.
Yes, GMV, there are real dangers that we should all be aware of regarding wood and its uses, and there is no doubt that you or any other bird owner should be concerned about these dangers. None of us should ever try to minimize these dangers by ignoring or pretending that they are not real or important.

Hmmmm, I don't think that this case is typical. For one thing, the parrot died 6 days after been shipped, it was an unweaned baby and the wood was flavored which, in my mind, it could mean that he was hungry (most likely had regressed and needed hand-feeding but owner did not know enough to feed it) and had nothing else to eat but the wood and, as it was flavored, he thought it was food (babies don't know what to eat or what not to eat). But I don't think that an adult, well-fed parrot would swallow a piece of wood. It might happen but as a fluke and nothing else.

I also don't think that it is typical and my first response was that I thought either the bird was very hungry or it had some vitamin deficiency that needed to be addressed.

It is not typical for birds to eat wood but when they do it is not rare for them to die of it.

no one is saying that it is typical for the birds to eat wood, we are saying that it is not typical for them to do so.

It is normal for a Senegal to chew up wood into little tiny pieces and spit it out. They may swallow a minute amount of this finely chewed wood, but as fine as it is chewed up and as long as it is only a tiny amount I don't think that I would get too concerned about it. The problem exists only with large pieces or larger amounts of it than you are describing to us.

Yes, they all do what you describe. One of my cockatoos would take a piece of wood in his hand and chew on it as if it was a piece of candy but he doesn't really swallow any of it, he just likes to chew it.
