How cold is too cold?

Postby paper_lantern » Tue Sep 30, 2014 11:11 am

At night I heat my house to about 74-76 farenheit. I'm thinking of taking Chubby to spend the weekend with me at my girlfriend's apartment. She keeps hers heated to about 67-72 degrees farenheit. Is this too cold? I'm planning on bringing a thick blanket to cover his cage at night, but I'm worried about it. How cold is too cold for a parrot? :gcc:

You're over thinking it. In the wild, there's no thermostat. Birds adapt. As long as your bird is healthy, you don't even need to think about changes under 10F. Over 10F, you just need to be careful that they are not too drastic or sudden. I take my birds outside in 40-100F weather and wouldn't have a problem leaving them out in anything 50-90F. They can handle it just fine.

The coldest temperature in Senegal (where they come from) is 65 degrees so anything lower than that for a period of time would depress their immune system.

Thanks guys! I'll try to stop worrying then. It's just if I wake up at night and the temperature is 72 in my house I find it freezing. So I automatically assume my tiny parrot must too. I need to stop assuming he feels the same things I do :P
