all of the toes on one foot point forward

Postby Peyton » Fri Oct 10, 2014 10:40 am

We are waiting on our fledgling CAG, but the breeder just told us our baby points all his toes forward on one foot. He said they took him to the vet and everything checked out fine. they seem to think it is just a quirk of his (our bird). He said he allows him to touch and place his toes proper without alarm but then he puts all toes forward again. I hate the thought of bailing out on this poor baby but to be honest, i am concerned about his well being and prefer to deal with the normal problems as they come not start out with a big one. Has anyone experienced this with a bird or heard of a familiar situation? Any advice is greatly appreciated, thanks.

I have not had this type of situation, myself, nor do I know of anyone else that has. The thing is that if it doesn't cause the bird any problem or pain, I would not rate it as a big problem. Also if there is nothing wrong with the bone structures than this may well be a thing that the bird will grow out of. While this is definitely not normal, there are many worse problems that a bird could have to learn to cope with. If the bird is otherwise healthy, I would not hold this against him although I might be inclined to try to get the price reduced some because of it.

My thoughts exactly! He said the vet x-rayed him and he or she is fine. I agree about the just being weird is not necessarily a problem and to be honest, it doesn't bother me. My main concern is a progressive illness or condition. thanks for the reply. I will post my thoughts after we see the new pics and video. Hey, it would be easier for him to do the Dr. Spock gesture. As strange as it sounds, it appears to perch correctly at times and with all the toes on the left foot forward at times. Im not gonna let that little quirk bother me. If its not hurting or causing problems, its probably okay.

I definitely wouldnt let it put me off a bird but do be aware that it may increase the likelihood of problems as s/he ages.

This is just a little deformation and nothing to worry about. I have a bird with no feet, one with only one leg, one with only one eye, one with a hole in his beak, one with a deformed beak, etc - it makes me and them no never mind.

In humans some people would call that double jointed- Some joints are genetically more bendable than the rest.

I'd REALLY like to see a picture of that foot though, your bird sure sounds unique! :).

In this one he has 3 toes forward. He will let you correct his toes and stay that way for a while.
