new owner of alexandrine parakeet

Postby summer_breeze » Sun Oct 19, 2014 1:25 pm

hello everyone, i'm new to this forum and i'm also a fresh owner of alexandrine parakeet.
i have several questions regarding my little fella. he is 4 months old, i bought it from breeder, so the parakeet was hand fed from the beginning of his life. i have had it for seven days now, and joey is acting a little bit strange - i dont know if that's usual for alexandrines or not.
he hasn't made any noise since he got here. when i get near the cage he starts to eat or clean himself. and this sometimes takes for hours. morover he doesnt eat unless someone is around.
when i put my hand near him he sometimes agressively wants so peck me. but the other times he lets me to pet him, but then again suddenly agression attack. is this normal, do you have similar experiences?
i dont want to rush things, but i really spend a lot of time with him, talking, trying to get closer. but his refusals somehow frustrate me that i will not be able to tame him.
thank you for your responses!

I wonder if your bird is hungry as it sounds like it has regressed to pre weaning and needs you to be there to know to eat which why it pecks at you sometimes. My birds get more aggressive if I am late for meal times, never more than a few minutes but the effect is noticeable. This regression is not an uncommon occurance, and appears to be becoming more common all the time. Try giving the bird some soft foods.
The more time you spend talking to your bird the better ,but a week is nothing to a parrot and you will find that your main watchword with all things parrot is patience and lots of it.

thank you for your answer, i will take it into consideration. i give him soft food, like vegetables, fruits, pasta, etc..
sometimes i have a feeling that he eats and cleans himself for the most of the time when i'm present just to make sure that i leave him alone, because i usually don't interrupt those processes.

No, soft food implies some type of grain or flour like brown rice, barley, wheat cooked to tenderness or couscous, polenta, whole grain pasta - always mixed with either very finely chopped veggies or purees (like baby food).

And no, again, his eating and preening while you are there says that he needs company. He is still a very young baby and, in the wild, his parents would still be feeding him so you need to spend many hours with him -open his cage and let him out while you either talk, sing or read to him - you can also watch TV, play video games or whatever as long as you verbally interact with him every few minutes.
