Comparison Charts?

Postby Roonil Wazlib » Fri Nov 21, 2014 8:42 am

So I know of the main "Name, Noise, Talking Ability, Cuddliness, Life Exp, House or Apartment living," chart, but i was wondering if there was any other more extensive, detailed charts?

What other details would you be looking for? Because, in truth, the only things that are common to all of them are species (and this is not even true of all species because we interbred subspecies without knowing it), a general physical description, a VERY general description of the species temperament and, possibly, average decibels of calls but everything else is individual to the bird and, personally, I would not even venture a description on the temperament or calls.

Parrots are not domesticated so they were not bred for specifics like, say, dogs which we have been breeding for different specific standards for hundreds of generations - and even with them you have puppies that come out different (like lemon instead of liver in the German shorthair, whites in the boxers or German shepherds, or hunting dogs that don't hunt and herding dogs that bite). With undomesticated animals, you have a larger variation of both looks AND temperaments... especially when you breed them in captivity which means no natural selection (thus all the established mutation lines we have in parrots).

Something like that Wolf. Its the only sort of comparison chart I've found. I know that charts like this are not fool proof, esp with the different kinds of personalities birds can have just as individuals, but general as a whole look at the generalization of the different species, things like if they talk, mimic or sing better (or not really at all), weather they are very social or not - whether it be within just the family flock or other family members they may see on a weekly basis, or if they are generally comfortable with strangers or not. Weather they like excitement and is generally a goofball, or if they are more happy in a quite environment. Weather they like training and learning new things. Simple things like how aggressive they get during what stages of life, or how often they need destructible toys replaced, if they have special dietary needs, what age they hit sexual maturity, how much interaction time they need, what sickness they are prone to, etc.. that sort of stuff. i understand that i can find these things not in charts, but was just wondering if there were any out there. Don't think there are though...esp with everyone's different opinions on what birds are like what, etc...

That is really cool and while I am unsure as to its accuracy, generally speaking, it is a great start. I have never seen one of them before this one, thank you for sharing it with us. One of the major reasons that you find so much information that appears to be in conflict concerning matters such as covered in this chart is that many people have only had one or two birds of a particular species and so their information is based on the individual personalities of these birds and not on the species as a whole. Another reason is in matters such as noise or cuddliness, it depends on each persons perspective as to how loud is too loud or in what they consider to be cuddley.
Once again thank you for sharing this with us.

I lived in a somewhat rural area. In the next house over the woman had gone to work and it sounded like she left a kid locked in at home. Being the person I am, I went over and looked in the window. I came face to face with Rambo who was sitting on top of his cage and yelling to a dog in the yard. 3 years later he was mine.

Well, the chart would be great if it was accurate at all because how you can classify a BlueFronted, a Jardine, a Major Mitchell, an IRN and a quaker as all the same (moderate), it's beyond me! Jardines are definitely moderate but BlueFronts, quakers and Major Mitchells are LOUD. Not as loud as a macaw, LSCs or U2s but loud nonetheless. And why would a dove not work out in an Apt? It's true that they coo at night but it's a low, very pleasant and relaxing sound which would not wake anybody up. And I got a Senegal that screamed so much and so often that the lady was afraid of getting evicted from her apartment. Any parrot left alone would scream so although cockatiels, budgies, linnies, bourkes, etc can work out in an apt, I would not recommend any other type for one.

I often wonder who writes these things but I think it's like Wolf says: they just ask people's opinions but the problem is that most people can't do a good comparison because they never lived with all these different species (neither have I) and, besides, it's all subjective because what's loud to one person doesn't necessarily have to be loud to another.

Let me, again, underline a sad fact to you: you can't believe everything you see written on the internet about parrots. With parrots in captivity it's mostly a matter of husbandry and a bit of luck.

Both my DYH & BF are cuddly. Rambo can be a real pain in the butt when he is in season. Nether one are aggressive except when defending a toy from the other.

You can't generalize. Their personalities are what makes them.

I had a big dog that played with my aunt's Chihuahuas. They barked constantly but my Dakota was too loud to bark indoors. I taught him the words no barking. He stopped barking indoors but he did make funny noises when they were barking.

It had nothing to do with the species. He was just sensitive to what I told him. (never had to raise my voice)

My amazons only hush for a second when I tell the shush.

Actually, my bluefronts do stop their loud calls when I go: "OK, enough already, I hear you" but, most likely it's because I let them do them for a couple of minutes before I actually say anything so they figure we are 'even Steven'
