What to do about a Budgie that might have mites?

Postby Alfie » Tue Dec 09, 2014 7:25 pm

I looked at her closely and couldn't see anything. Since she's not hand-tame yet I can't holder and don't want to invade her personal space to look closer, but I think she may have mites or something. Today when I came home from school, she kept ruffling her feathers and seemed agitated. She also moved/jumped around more than normal, and was preening herself kind of violently. She currently has some pinfeathers and I've noticed a lot of feather growth, does molting just itch? Or could it be mites?

I am still a bit new to budgies, just brought a pair of them home yesterday, because they were not receiving the care that they were promised. But those pin feathers do itch. You could get some aloe vera liquid to add to some water to spray her down with once a week. You want the kind that is 100% organic, made from the inner leaf and free of any additives especially alcohol. It will help with the itching.

Now I don't know if your bird has mites or not. If the problem is caused by pin feathers then the aloe will help some. If your bird has mites you need to see the vet to get proper treatment, the over the counter treatments don't work and can harm your bird. Birds with mites need to start treatment as soon as possible.

I doubt she has mites... do you provide her with a bowl where she can bathe? She also should not be molting right now so her endocrine system is out of whack and you need to be very careful with budgies on the solar schedule because the ones that are alone don't lay but they can end up with what it's called soft molt (when they molt almost throughout the entire year)
