All good questions and valid concerns.
Well let's proceed to the answers, but wait a minute! Let us consider first things first. You need to have two complete cage setups because you need to provide a minimum of a 30 day quarantine period for the new bird. This is for the protection of your first bird, you want to be certain that the new bird does not have something that will make your first bird sick. Them and only then can you introduce the two of them and see how they are going to get along. Budgies, for the most part will usually get along without any problem, but it is always a good idea to go slowly at first.
Budgies are very opportunistic breeders, so there may be breeding more than one time per year, but that does not mean that there will be any eggs produce from this and the best way to keep from having eggs is to not provide a nesting space or nesting materials for them. If you end up with eggs you can replace them with plastic eggs. You don't just want to take them out not even one as the birds know how many eggs they lay and if you take one they will replace it and this can cause some health issues.
Getting a mate for your bird will have an affect on your relationship with your bird. How much it changes is partially up to you and what you do. You will have to spend more time with them to keep your relationship where you want it to be and it will take a bit more effort as far as training goes as well. But despite it meaning that you have to work with it a little harder you should still be able to train them and enjoy a good relationship with both of them.
