hand rearing

Postby saturn221171 » Sat Feb 14, 2015 5:36 am

Hi all. I have a pair of green cheeked conures that are on chicks at the moment. I want to hand rear them but wanted to ask a few questions before I do. We have hand reared kakarikis budgies and cocktails and wondered are these similar to hand rear. I normally pull chicks at around 3 weeks old and they go in a plastic container indoors with shavings no heat and never had any problems. I do have a heated brooder but do I do the same as I have with the others or use the brooder. Thanks in advance

Then why respond at all? My guess is it's your way of showing contempt. Quite passive, aggressive don't you think?

I don't understand either, it is easier to not respond at all if you don't want to be helpful.

And quite honestly you have every right to do so. I understand that some of us are not into supporting the breeding industry and I believe that is justified because of the overpopulation of homeless parrots that exists in the USA and in the rest of the world as well. But I do not believe that this can be resolved with rudeness, it must be solved through education and then perhaps through proper regulation of this industry along with the right environmental laws to stop the destruction of their native habitat.
I will be honest in that I do not support the breeding of parrots for the above mentioned reasons, However if I had the answers that you are seeking I would give them to you. And my reason is quite simple. Whether I agree with what you are doing or not you question involves a life and that life is more precious to me than any disagreement that you and I may have.
I deeply regret and apologise for the reaction to your questions by this forum member.

Sorry, it was rude of me to answer that way. I did not mean it that way, it's that I always think that people expect a reply from either me or Wolf when it comes to this kind of question and I know that Wolf has no experience whatsoever on breeding so the answer would have to come from me so I just meant to save the OP's time. But, yes, you are all right, I should have just not answered.

I only know of one breeder on this forum and have sent him a PM in an attempt to get you the information that you require. I hope that he responds soon.

Thank you for still being with us. I quite agree with you as to how to best deal with these issues of over population of birds in the rescues and the overbreeding of birds in general. I also agree with you about needing to stop the destruction of these birds natural habitat.
I still apologise for not being able to answer you earlier question and am embarking on learning as much as I can about the subject. I regret that not only is it too late to assist you with an answer but it will take a while before I am able to learn enough to assist anyone else with these types of questions. By the way, if you have not already done so go to the top of the page and check your PMs.
