Parrots and vacation

Postby Dr.lipp » Sun Apr 26, 2015 8:14 pm

Hi there! I hope to get a parrot in the future and would like to know more about them before I do. I ocassionally am required to travel, of course it would be difficult to bring my parrot friend along with me so I would have to make some sort of arrangement. From what I understand they require a lot of attention and I'm afraid he will be really upset or possibly bond with someone else while I am gone.
Can you tell me more about what it's like when you leave your parrots for periods at a time?

Educate the bird and the caregiver. I don't leave them with someone they don't know. They all know and like my sister Becky. She usually stays here while I am away. I am sure they would be okay with going to her house. The last trip I made I needed Becky with me. The Amazons and my three little dogs were left with my aunt and my other sister coming to care for them. When I got back I was over run by very excited babies telling me what they went through while I was gone. Of course they didn't use words but the wimpering was awful.

Who ever you choose make sure they spend time with you and the bird together. The bird will learn bye bye means their friend will take care of them while you are gone.

I've had my baby for a week <3 one of the reasons I got an eclectus, is because, typically, they are not one person birds - which means if your going away heaps, it won't worry them as much because they bond (typically) with the whole house hold). I would suggest not going away for a few months at least when/if a parrot comes into your life if you can help it, the parrot will need stability and routine to understand and establish his home.

If you leave him/her with family or friends, make sure you work up to it gradually. In the future, i'd like to go camping alot, and because we only have a tent, i can't bring Julian along, so im going to get him accustomed to my mum and dad, and their home, and overnight stays before i leave him for a week without me.
