Perches for Nails and Beaks

Postby lrhodes91 » Wed May 06, 2015 10:44 am

Hi Everyone!

Could I get some suggestions about what you do to keep your parrots nails and beaks trimmed down without having to go so often to the vet to get them trimmed? I'm thinking about perches mostly. Also, have any of you given your bird (especially African Grey) a Lixit perch? It is made of volcano rock. I found it at Petco. My cockatiel has one in her cage and she loves it. She uses it to wipe her beak and I think it helps her beak to stay better trimmed. Although I don't think cockatiels needs beak trimming like Greys. She has really worn it down(not beak but the Lixit perch) LOL. I want one for my CAG, but don't want him to injest any. Any thoughts on this product also would be much appreciated.

Thanks so much,
Lyn

I have had my Grey for three years give or take a few months and she is about 15 or 16 years old, I have never needed to trim either her beak or nails. I use mostly all natural wood perches with the bark left on them for her to peel off at her leisure.
The only bird that I have that I need to trim its beak is a budgie with liver disease.

WOW!!! That is neat!!! I know you must feel blessed to live where you live!!! I live in a very rural area. I have access to many, many trees, but they are all mostly Georgia pines. There is one great benefit to those pine trees. In the Fall, we can collect hundreds of pine cones for Happy!!!! I did purchase a cement perch from the local Petco. It has a smooth top and bottom. I'm hoping it agrees with Happy's feet and he will accept it soon. He thinks new things are monsters so I'm working with him to accept his new perch. Thanks so much!!! :D

I also only trim the beak of a quaker that has her top and bottom misaligned but never touch the other birds'. Beaks should never be trimmed or buffed unless there is a medical condition that requires it. I put rocks I get from my garden for them to wipe their beaks on (they also use the natural tree branches they have for perches). I have a couple of Sweet Feet (the only kind I use and recommend http://www.amazon.com/Sweet-Feet-Beak-S ... or+parrots) for my cockatoo because his nails are like daggers and, as he can't fly, he hangs on real tight to my hand, arm, shoulder.
