Humidity

Postby Pajarita » Wed May 27, 2015 10:23 am

We often forget about this. We are always worried about the temperature and the air quality but, for a parrot, humidity is as important. Now, this piece mentions 50 - 55% humidity but this is only a comfortable level for humans as well as parrots from arid and temperate zones, in reality - parrots from tropical and semi-tropical areas need 70 - 75%.

Yikes 75%. I never thought about that. We have a parrot in our office and I am not sure we could maintain that level of humidity.
I work for a Dallas carpet cleaner, Prodigy Clean and help care for the company bird.

Probably not, and that is one reason that frequent cold water baths are helpful for them.

I was thinking having them in the bathroom during a shower must be good for this reason - whether they shower with you or not.

Yes, the steam from the shower is good for them but it only lasts a few minutes...

Not many places can take that humidity level for very long as it encourages the growth of mold. I do use a humidifier but I still have to cut it off and let the humidity drop back down.

True. I even have a problem in the birdroom where there is no furniture or anything that can really be affected by it except for the walls and the windows which I have to wash with a bit of Clorox periodically to get rid of the beginning of mold that would grow there if I didn't.

wow that level of humidity would be impossible at my house. I do take Scooter into the bathroom while we shower, she sits above on the shower doors, honestly its her favorite place in the house. Sometimes when we she is cranky and we shower the sound of the water will mellow her out she just sits there and closes her eyes. I have often thought about getting some sort of table fountain for her room

Yes, it's impossible for any human home... we would live surrounded by mold and mildew! And another reason why it's such a great disservice for parrots to be kept as human pets.

Have you tried giving her a shower in the tub? My Freddy loves them - but then, he loves water any which way he can get it -he even runs to get under the stream from the garden hose
