Well, I don't want to be the party pooper or the voice of doom but, normally, GCCs end up screaming and biting when they are alone all day long. It's simply way too hard on them...

I keep telling my parents that, but they don't listen to me. Also why I want to get Akimi a companion as soon as I can. I worry about her all day when I'm at work and I hate leaving her alone. :(

In the meantime, I'm spending as much time with her as possible. I got home a little late yesterday because I had to make a detour to go vote. I come home as early as I can manage and spend the whole evening with her until she goes to bed.

The company I just started working for has a lot of room for promotion and also hires people to work from home. I figure if I can make myself as valuable as possible while I'm there, I can get my pick of shifts and get home earlier, and maybe eventually start working from home. Keeping my fingers crossed and keeping an eye out for an adoptable male GCC in the meantime.

Besides all that, I just really miss her when I'm away at work. These last few weeks of staying home unemployed have spoiled me something fierce, I'm afraid.

Working from home would be ideal. My fingers are crossed.

Thanks, Liz. I miss my animals a lot when I'm out of the house. Not just Akimi either - my dog, Bruno is going on 14 and my parents don't always have as much patience for him as I think he deserves for being a senior. I might ask my supervisors about the availability of work-from-home positions this week when I get a chance, because as much as I've enjoyed my new work place and colleagues so far, it gets a little harder to leave my fur and feather babies behind every morning.

It also gets a little harder to put Akimi to bed on time with how early it gets dark and how much later in the evening I've been getting home. She's been making good strides in her flight training the last few days, and she gets so sweet and snuggly when she starts getting sleepy. She burrows into my hair, presses right up against my face, and starts nodding off. <3

Have I mentioned lately that my parents think I'm nuts? ;P

Hmmm, well, although I applaud your commitment and love for your animals, young people should work outside the house, meet new people, socialize, etc. It's healthy for them and part of 'growing up'.

I am an old lady and I worked for many years outside the house (over 40). Nowadays, I don't and, because my husband works in another state, he is not home most of the time so I spend my days with the animals... I love them and do not resent the work or time spent with them but people need to interact with other people, too. Even old people like me  So I am thinking of joining a book club, going back to school, doing yoga... something to get me out of the house.

What are these "going outside" and "growing up" and "socializing" things you speak of? I don't understand the concept. ;)

Pffft, I have... friend.

Akimi's getting better at flying perch-to-perch, and she's even starting hopping perch-to-hand (we'll work up to flight recall from there). I've also started trying to teach her to do a flip around her perch. She goes almost completely upside down now... I just have to get her making a full circle. With the better exercise she gets during training, she gets a little stronger and more energetic every day. :D

She also discovered the joy of Fetch yesterday... by which I mean, she throws the ball and I go get it.

Yes, that's 'parrot fetch', the opposite of 'dog fetch'

I play ball with Kookooloo, she throws the ball at me and I toss it back over to her and she throws it back at me. She is not the most accurate at throwing the ball and I do end up going after it part of the time, but she does a pretty good job most of the time.
