flying?shhhh

Postby Lori » Fri Jul 17, 2015 11:05 am

I've kept scooters wings clipped her whole life. I haven't clipped them in awhile and she is just a few feathers away from full wings....She hates my husband, he hates her, eh I make it work  .( on hubs, he makes her most of her toys and stands he does make sure all her needs are met. She will take nuts from him, thats her part) If she learns she can fly in the house is she going to fly at him and bite? He thinks she will. I think she will fly at him for a place to land then realize " hey I hate this guy' then bite.

A flying bird is a happy bird. Clipped wings that are allowed to grow out create a completely different personality. She will not fly and attack him. She may land on him to hitch a ride. There should be less squaking and more cuddling.

GRIN, I think its time we give it a try. She has one feather to go on one side and 2 feathers to go on the other, actually she probably could fly right now she just doesn't know it....She got startled the other day and jumped off me and flew to the ground then walked back to me. I guess I have to show her she can?

How old is she. If she has been clipped for a long time you will have to teach her.
Rambo just grew flight feathers. He flies about a foot above the floor and sometimes uses a foot to push back up.
I held him across the room and told him to fly to the couch. His landings are not great so I aimed him at something soft.

Scooter is 30. I think maybe its been to long. Not sure how I would start, I don't think she is going to willing let go of something solid she is standing on, i'm going to have to give her a nudge. I watched the video clips on the perch stands, Scooter is not a food oriented kinda bird so treat training is out. We haven't done it in awhile but we use to play I would hold her feet and sorta swing my arm up and down and on the down she would flap her wings she loved it and it would really tire her. Maybe I should bring that game back .....

After 30 years of no flight I am not very hopeful about it but in any case the game that you mentioned would be good for her, I think.

I finally figured out Rambo's age. He was 15 when I got him 15 years ago which makes him 30.
This year he had his first good molt and grew flight feathers. Before this I exersized his muscles by aiming him at the sofa while he was on my finger. I lifted him up and down and counted to 3.
He flapped on one and two then let go at three. He is trying on his own now but does it about a foot off the floor.

wow Rambo is 30! does he or did he ever flap his wings just for fun? And does he flap them now as he is learning?LIke does he practice on his cage? Scooter will still hang from the side of her cage and flap her wings I tried sitting on my bed and just gingerly letting her fall on the bed, first it was almost impossible to get her to let go of my fingers, then when she did and landed on the bed turned and looked at me like What the heck did you do that for! ( I have a plan to turn this into a great game) She loves to play on the bed anyway.
You mention that when a bird learns to fly there personality changes. Really? I'm curious about that? I would like to hear more about how there birds changed once they learned to fly Again.

Scooter will never be able to fly well enough to do the kamikaze on your husband. After 30 years, her muscles are atrophied and her tendons have shrunk from lack of use. But you should still exercise her as much as possible if for nothing else, the fun of it.

The only noticeable change that I am aware of is that they often relax a bit more due to a boost in their confidence level.
