we asked for 2 females but......now what?

The evening Wed, Aug 8th, I brought home what was supposed to be 2 female kakarikis. The fellow said the yellow was a approx. 5 months old and the green 7. They were raised in a large room with other kaks so I knew they would likely prefer each others company, at least at first. My birds free fly in the house but go to their cages at night, almost always on their own and somewhat surprisingly so did they from the first night.

The trouble is, on Friday afternoon we noticed the yellow was on the green, who was in full acceptance, three times in a few minutes. We called the fellow and left a message, but I am hoping for some input from you all. I did also put the yellow in a separate cage overnight and have not let him out yet this morning, which I dislike doing.

Well, they are not only, most likely (but not necessarily, plenty of homosexual birds out there), male and female but also older so the 'fellow' lied to you and I don't see what it is that you want to accomplish by calling him as, obviously, he cannot be trusted. But, in reality, even if you do have a pair of male/female of sexually mature birds, it's not only no big deal but, actually, much better for them. All you have to do is keep them to a strict solar schedule with full exposure to dawn and dusk and they will stop producing sexual hormones soon (days are getting shorter). And just because they had sex, it doesn't mean that the hen will produce eggs or that the eggs will be fertile (reproduction is entirely the female's choice) but, just in case, order yourself some fake eggs from the internet (http://dummyeggs.com/) and, if she does lay, switch the real ones for the fake ones. Problem solved!

And if you want to be certain of their sex get them DNA tested. As far as I am aware of both the male and female look the same in all three of the species of Kakariki's, so you can't tell them apart by looking at them.
