Well, I don't know about the price of a baby in NZ but, when it comes to maintenance expenses (housing, food, medical, toys, etc), they are the same as any other parrot of a similar size; and the actual cost depends on how much you want to spend on them because you can go from keeping them in a small cage in a corner of your living room and feeding them cheap seeds or pellets to giving them their own room with special lights and an organic, fresh food diet.

And the more you put into their daily care including the time for personal interaction and flying the cheaper the other expenses such as vet bills will be.

Good choice ! My Grey would be highly irritated with me if all I spent with her was only 6 hours a day. She thinks that I am all hers and therefor am supposed to spend all of my time with her.

We do not have extra time.
My Amazons are not caged so they get involved with my routine. Like a toddler, you spend quality time with them but are in constant contact all day.

Ahhh, well, in my case, it's because I am a woman of leisure (who gets up before 5am during the summer so she can feed her parrots at dawn, never goes anywhere farther than a couple of hours car ride, and who spends her entire days in pleasant pursuits like cleaning, scrubbing, cooking, grooming dogs, doing laundry, etc)

Liz I like your way of not keeping birds caged but that would be difficult for me
