GCC hormonal?

Postby Chantilly » Wed Nov 11, 2015 2:31 am

I was wondering at what age do GCCs get hormonal... :?
Because we are geting signs with Tilly. I think.
She was born 31 of July 2014 so she is now 1 year and 5 months.
* Somewhat snappy with my Mum who weaned her, she used to be wonderful with.
* Bites my Dad who used to be favourite person
* Bites brother.
* Okayish with sister (still a bit nipy)
*When I walk in room she flies to me.
*sqwauks more.
And so you know bites arnt that bad, she dos'nt use half the force she could but still, there is some attitude there.
And when she flies to me its not like she was dying to be with be like Im her(or his  ) mate, just like she's happiest chillin on me (she used to want to chill on Dad or Mum.)
Thanks.
Pluss she is still verry patient with me so yay!

Puberty usually starts at around 18 months of age but can also begin as early as one year of age or as late as 2 years of age with the males often being the ones that start earlier. I don't have a link for reference material on this but do remember researching this very recently for another member. I don't have any GCCs myself and a lot of my research is simply based of getting answers for other members.

Although it costs a bit more you can have your avian vet do the DNA testing while he does a wellness exam especially if he does any blood work or if you have him trim the birds nails. With a bird that you can't visually sex the DNA testing is the least invasive as well as the most accurate way to test for their sex and even if you do not plan on breeding it is very useful to know as their dietary requirement are a bit different according to their sex.

Tilly hasnt been to an avian vet before. or any vet at all for that fact. We live pretty much in the middle of no where... so the nearest avian speciallist is over four hours drive away... And we havnt had a problem with Tilly before. Although I would like to get a health check, theres a guy local (I think..)but he isnt experienced or proffesional.

The only avian vet or even exotic animal vet is just over 2 hours from me one way, so It ends up being an all day trip for me. I would not go with the guy that you mentioned, you really do need to have an avian vet check your bird out and do a general health exam. No one can do much for you if your bird gets sick or injured other than an avian vet so it is good to at least get her established with one and have a yearly check up.
Our best use is with behavioral issues as well as preventative measures to keep your bird healthy. We are not experts but the combined experiences of the members can greatly help in improving your relationship with your bird and in preventing some injury or illness especially in dietary issues.

I'll talk to my family about it, I would like to have it done.... It is 4 hours one way so eight hours in the end... and lifes pretty crazy right now, but perhaps if we can do it when we go see relatives up there. Out of curiosity, what do they test for?? Thanks Wolf, I will try to get it done, but I have no idea if/when It will be able to happen:(

I would not know what they test for where you live as there are several diseases that are commonplace in Australia that are rare in the States, so I would think that the testing would be different there. With mine there was a visual exam, a blood chemistry panel done, a fecal swab and I also had a DNA test done on the last bird that I took to the vet.
