Body language

Postby BabyBird » Tue Dec 22, 2015 8:25 am

My conure has started doing this thing where he/she fans out he/shes tail and turns to the side and makes clicking noises constantly non-stop, then turns around and fans his tail and leans to the oposite side, (almost falling off his/her perch) (he/she does this on 1 leg, with the other leg as high in the air as possible) and starts chirping and clicking until I look at him and say "hi" then he/she stops. Then for the rest of the day she just sits there (because we are not quite bonded yet, she will take seeds from my hand but won't let me touch him/her) she has plenty of toys but just seems to enjoy sitting on her highest blue rough perch.

Sounds like a mating dance. Is it possible that she is hormonal?

I don't think so, I don't even know if it's a male or female, she (I'm guessing) does it whenever a male family member is in the room or when I'm not paying attention to her, she's also just started clinging to the front of the cage until I come over to he/she and does a regurgitating motion with her head.. But never spits anything out.

How old is the bird? How long have you had it? What does it eat? And what is the light schedule it's under? Does it come out to fly? If so, how long is its out-of-cage time?

Sorry for all the questions but the answers will determine if the bird is hormonal or not.

The questions are perfectly fine :) my conure is 1 year old (born 2014) I've had it for a week, she gets light until about 9pm and goes to bed until 7 to 9am. I've been feeding her some a seed mix of sunflower seeds and the usual bird seed, she is slowly converting to harrisons high potency fine, and I feed her carrot and other veg occasionally because she is very fussy. She can't come out to fly at the moment and doesn't get out of cage time yet because she is a parent reared bird and is still bonding with me (surprisingly well for a parent reared) (she has a ring round her leg, it's green and has her date of birth on it) if you need anymore info just ask :) thankyou :gcc: she also calls out to me if I'm not in the room and goes to sleep hanging off her cage in the corner.

Hi, just thought id let you know my gcc does it too, mostly just when she sees herself(the strange little birdy) in the mirror.
Just as you described she fans her tail out, clicks allot and does a dance leaning forward and doing a slow bop, but she nearly looses her balance and flips over.she does it on two feet though.. :)
And anthough she be little, she is fierce ~Shakespeare

Haha yes  Mine actually has a verry annoying game, she plays peek a boo in my shirt. She goes down my shirt, wriggles around like mad, and pops her head up to say hi, and dives strainght back down. :o
They are sooo cheeky :P (Tilly makes me laugh so much) :) :)
Hehe, feel free to show us all a photo! :D :D

Green cheeked conures reach sexual maturity between the ages of 1 to 3 years, although many of the do so around 1 year old it is not uncommon for them to reach sexual maturity at a younger age, especially those that are raised in captivity.
You bird is exhibiting traits that lead me to believe that it is reaching or has begun puberty or sexual maturity. At this point in its life cycle and for the remaining 30 years or more attention to things such as diet and light schedules as well as the types of light that the bird receives becomes an important part of their daily routine. While we can assist you by sharing our experiences it would be advisable for you to research photoperiodism in birds as well as learning as much as you can about their natural diet and to feed them as closely to that as is possible. We know that you will not actually be able to duplicate this natural diet, because we can't do it either, but it helps to do the best that we can in regards to this. I will say that the more raw fruits and vegetables that you can get your bird to eat the better and to cut back on the seeds until they are only given as their dinner and then removed after they go to sleep at night. Too many seeds or pellets will shorten the life span of your bird by causing liver, kidney and heart disease, however they do require a certain amount of protein which can be supplied through whole grains and through the limited use of seeds and / or pellets. I prefer a good seed mix over pellets.
