Attacking CAG

Postby kannon » Mon Dec 28, 2015 11:49 am

I re-homed a bird last summer.I know little about him other than he has passed thru several homes.I have been taking my time with him, talking not looking at him directly following recommendations read here in various threads. One recommendation was to give bird lots of outside time.I have a big garden room where the birds are kept and where I work.So this bird spent most of the daylight hours roaming as he wanted. He seems to be developing a relationship with my female CAG.
THE Problem:recently he has started to attack me,even up to the point where he will come up behind me at the desk and bite the back of my ankle. He will also come out from behind some pots in the room to bite my feet if I get too close to him.
Am I dealing with a hormonal bird or a territorial conflict?I have seen a video on YouTube that suggests it is a territorial issue and that I should confine the bird and time outside the cage should be a reward for good behavior. Not sure what is good behavior. If I offer a treat he ignores the treat and goes for finger and draws blood. He is not interested in toys but like to destroy the boxes that things come in.Interested in your ideas. The current situation is good for no one.

Well, parrots are territorial when they are hormonal, thus hormonal and territorial are pretty much the same thing so I don't know what the people who advised you are referring to when they make a distinction between the two. Grays are short day breeders and the hens are all broody while the males are more protective and aggressive. It's normal... especially if he is bonding or has already bonded with your female. He doesn't want the competition (meaning: you!) and he is throwing you out of the room

Thanks Pajarita,I guessed that was the issue but how should I handle it?
With the male restricted today, the female is hanging on top of his cage.Normally they are roaming the room.I can't control the male.He knows how to step up but will attack a stick if I try.He can fly which he will also do to get away from me.In his cage,he is very calm and not all fluffed up as he is when free.
I am thinking,I may have to have an indoor aviary built to hold the pair.

Please excuse me for being a bit confused, but according to your profile you have two birds, one being a CAG and in this post you have identified her as a female if I am correct. Does this mean that the male bird you are speaking of is the Cockatoo?
