concerned parrot owner

Postby annabelle » Tue Jan 12, 2016 4:57 pm

My parrot was recently in the vets over night as she had an infection . she's been home for 2 week and is still quiet and not her normal self. She is now off her medicine but still has dihorrea. Do I take her back to the vets?

What kind of medication was she taking? Could have been the side effects making her feel bad.

There is very little information to go on such as what type of infection or what medications were given. These things would help us to help you better. As it is all that I can say is that the birds sounds as if it is still sick and therefore still needs medical assistance. so yes I would return to the vet for further diagnoses and treatment.

Now if you would, please tell us what you are feeding this bird as well as when you feed it this food. Please tell us what the birds daily schedule is, including when it gets up and when it goes to sleep, how often it is out of its cage and for how long, how much interaction and what type of interaction the bird has daily with its favored human. While none of these thing will probably help much with the birds current illness, although they might, I am really looking to help you to prevent further illness and stress in the birds life. The more that we know about the bird and its daily routines and behaviors the better we can help. Stress and or diet are often the biggest factors that contribute to a bird developing an illness and since we are further removed from your bird we may see things that you may overlook due to it being familiar to you. Still the first thing is to get the bird continued treatment for its illness.

Baytril. It's for a respiratory/chest infection. I'mean just hoping she'll go back to her normal noisy self soon. Bella is normally a chirpy happy bird and as soon as her cage opens, she wants to be out. I have a 2 year old (soon to be 3) little boy and Bella :amazon: normally tries to be as loud or louder than him, also when the hoover is on. Since she's been ill, there's beeno little noise from her. Altho she had started to eat more of her food now this is making me think she's getting better. I tried to get her out last night but she wouldn't budge. I'm thinking she might hold a grudge and has fell out with me and my partner since we took her to the vets. Also we asked the vet about her dihorrea and they said it's because of the medicine she's taking. We gave her last dose on friday/Saturday and she still has it and is doing more of it.

Give her some good probiotics (I am now using Bluebiotics) and lots of fresh produce (the enzymes in it will help replenish the good bacteria in her digestive tract).

And make sure you include lots of stuff rich in betacarotene (vit A precursor) because although I am not saying this is the case, usually, when parrots get respiratories, they have a vit A deficiency but you can't really give them the final form of the vitamin, you need to feed them food rich in betacarotene so they can produce it themselves - things like carrots (they need to be organic), cooked sweet potatoes, cantaloupe, dark leafy greens, red peppers (they also need to be organic), tomatoes (organic, too), etc.

Thanks for your advice. Bella :amazon: is slowly getting better. Still not as noisy though (I maybe shouldn't complain haha). And she doesn't have dihorrea anymore
