Reported parrot abuse concern!

Postby JaydeParrot » Mon Jan 18, 2016 8:55 am

I last year foolishly attended one of the uk's most hated bird shows (bird selling markets) last year after being told it had improved, it had not and contained thousands of parrots of various species being bought, sold, neglect, abused, given either dirty or no food/water and being violently seperated from their mates to be sold cheaper to the money grasping public.

After suffering months full of guilt I finally phoned the Rspc and told them what I had saw and that it would occur again within two months. They told me they might do something about it next time it's on but only if I am there, see enough neglect and abuse and then phone them, they 'might' send an officer on the day to take a look I asked what the officer would do when he/she got there, the woman on the phone didn't know and couldn't 100% verify that an officer would attend if I phoned them on the day!

So to sum up if I don't go they WON'T do anything and if I do go they MIGHT do something!

I'm of the oppion that if something bad is happening, trying is miles better than not trying, I just don't know what to do?

Does anyone have any ideas on this, as many view and ideas as possible would be helpful on this, thanks.

P.S.- Yes, there is recorded footage of the event.

May I ask which one you are referring to? Multiple complaints may help ;)

Bird fairs are always full of sights of neglect and even abuse... the breeders that sell there are always the bad ones because good breeders have waiting lists. And, although I make it a point to stay away from places like that, I think that if it meant the difference between the possibility of getting some action or nothing, I would go.

Ah yes I know of it. I went a few years ago. The one at Newark is pretty much the same too. I didn't stay long and never went back because like you I felt the conditions were horrendous for the poor birds.
They aren't allowed to sell "pet" birds but they still bring them - usually babies and Keep them "under the table".

really, I don't think you have to go back either. Just check it's still on and report it anyway. I live about an hour away so could always Check in and report it again myself.

Hi marie, hope you're ok, dunno if you're still up for going to the showground, if not i'm certainly going to attempt to attend as am concerned they might not turn up if I didn't.

I am really afraid of visiting such a thing. It is hard but I have always managed to keep my violence in. I don't know if I could there.
If you can make yourself go back, please do. You may be the only hope for them and you might get the others around you to report.

Liz, it makes me physically sick going, but if I don't it looks like no one else will. I just keep thinking about this one time when an advertised bonded pair of ringnecks were huddled together in a small rusty cage. A buyer decided he only wanted the female and the seller seperated them, the two ringnecks were screaming for each other as the buyer walked away with the female.

If this site didn't prohibit it I'd swear like a sailor! Just got of the phone with the so called 'animal protectors' turns out they've decided that i first need to phone the council to see if the show has a license as it's up to the show to decide whether animals are being treated cruelly or not (crazy!). If the place doesn't have a license the rspca 'might' lift finger, if the place does the rspca will close their eyes, ears and go do something else!

Everyone i talk to seems to think i'm overreacting and that theres nothing wrong with what happens here, when so many voices tells you that something wrong is right, you slowly begin to believe them.
