Should leg ring be removed?

Postby JaydeParrot » Fri Feb 12, 2016 6:51 am

Besically both my sennies are microschipped and have open leg rings. Cain's fine with her's but hide always seems to have an irritated area where the ring rubs him, he also sometimes falls off his perch (there are clothes under newspapers on the floor of his cage so it's a soft landing) and I think landing on his feet causes the ring to dig into his leg and makes it hurt. It's an open ring anyway and some people does say they think the open rings are dangerous, also he is microchipped and if for any reason he was stolen or something happened his ring might get removed anyway. Suming it up I think it would be better for him if his ring was removed but what do others think?

Also I removed my starling's leg ring earlier this month as it was plastic, had no id on it anyway and he'd somehow managed to get his back toe trapped underneath it so he couldn't grip anything properly.

If the ring is causing him any kind of trouble then I would have the vet remove it, just to be on the safe side of things, besides if there is any raw area around it that is a possible source of an infection, so again I would have it removed.

Hide should not be having this type of balance problem. It could be due to a dietary deficiency or if you are feeding pellets and any sort of vitamin/ mineral supplement then too much of any one of them could be interfering with the proper absorption of other vitamins or minerals creating what appears as a deficiency, or it could be caused by heavy metal poisoning. For that reason I would have a blood panel run as well as a heavy metal tox screening done to rule these out or to find out what is wrong so it can be addressed.

If the rings are open, they are not really serving any purpose so, yes, by all means, remove them. But Wolf is right, healthy birds don't have balance or stability problems so, please, take yours to the avian vet for a completely physical because something is wrong (this is the one that also plucks, right?).
