When you are near him think of his beauty. Try to imagine what he is thinking. They are little but have big personalities. Bring him out to where you are the most so he can watch you while you are not watching him. Sing to him. Myrtle does not sing yet but will land on my shoulder and hum so I will sing to her. I have found that the more active the household the faster they adapt because they are not always the center of attention and can just be themselves while watching the kaos around them.

Only you know what you are capable of. Only you know if you are the best human for him. You took him from the only world he knew and put him in yours. Yes he is scared and needs comfort.

I work in animal rescue and have extensive knowledge and experience with anxious animals. I don't think I really am encouraging the behavior, I have the patience to deal with it!

I have tried to bring him out so he can watch me while I'm working on something but he won't have it and flies to be on my shoulder. I may wind up returning him and settling for a tiel, which I have handled before extensively. This one may do better in a different home.

This is normal for this species of parrot as it lives high in the forest canopy in its natural habitat. This species of parrot is usually a bit uncomfortable when on the floor and will probably always look for some place higher than the floor, unless you are playing with it on the floor.

Cockatiels are partial ground feeders and are much more comfortable with roaming around on floors.

Names are important to parrots, much moreso than most humans realize and that is the only reason that I suggested a name as I didn't know if you had chosen one for it, yet.
