Dumb questions about parrots, noise and sleeping?

Postby Viatrixa » Fri Mar 11, 2016 3:18 pm

I have a question that's more than likely dumb, and one I think I already know the answer to already. But, I feel it's important to get a confirmation of sorts.

This doesn't actually have anything to do with the noise a parrot itself makes, but about how they feel about noises not made by them. I noticed that our IRN Simo seems to be fidgety and restless when the house is silent. Even if we are awake. I experimented and observed him while for example, having headphones on in the day time and playing / watching stuff, reading, just doing low activity things without sounds and then compared to how he is when there is noise in the house (music, game sounds, talking, vaccuuming, hair dryer).

The results were as one with logic sense might expect: Restless, fidgety, climbing all over his cage, doesn't play while it's silent. When there's noise, he exhibits positive body language and seems chipper and comfortable. I'm guessing this is all very normal and logic because in their natural environment, silence is rare and occurs seldom like that. It seems to be the same when he sleeps: I put on some gentle rain sounds for him (and myself and the husband!). If the house is silent in the night, I can hear him stirring in the cage albeit it's covered - but with the sounds on, once again he seems relaxed and calm (albeit the rain sounds are on I'd still be able to hear him if he did stir).

I'm just simply wondering if I'm correct with this: that parrots just naturally like a bit of noise around them day and night. Do other people put on some gentle sounds for the night, like rain or some such? Or is this something negative and looked down on? (in addition he seems to prefer certain types of music to others but that's a different, although fun, topic! )

Well in nature there are not that many times when the environment goes silent and at those times it is normally a sign of danger such as a large predator in the area and so complete or nearly complete silence is a valid cause for alarm. I do not put on any noise such as you use or any other kind as I have enough animals that it is never completely quiet. I also live out in the country so there are the normal sounds of the woods at night. Most of the time the problem for parrots is that there is too much noise, usually from humans and their activities.
Parrots are flock animals and when they roost for the night there are always some of them that are awake or not fully asleep as they are keeping watch for predators and which birds are awake and watching changes often throughout the night so that they all get to have a good nights rest. Our birds are not in their natural environment and are in many cases the only bird in the home, if they are accustomed to a little noise at night then the absence of that noise will keep them awake and is cause for alarm. I have 7 birds as well as cats and dogs and then there is my Lady and myself and I am awake a large portion of the night. I hear my birds all night long and know that there is at least one or two of them awake at night, I know that it varies on which ones are awake during the night and that it changes every hour or so on which birds are awake.
If your bird is nervous when everything is quiet then provide some sounds for him. Like whenever I leave the house to go to town or outside I leave some music on for them. Since I have as many birds as I do my birds would be fine without the music but you have a single bird and since it is alone it can not get any of the feelings of security, safety and well being from its flock members other than yourself as you are its flock.
The only dumb question is the one that is not asked. Flock animals such as parrots are never alone in their natural environment from the time they are just an egg until the time of their death and they depend upon the flock and their mate for their feelings of safety, security and well being and they know that if they are all alone that they will soon be a snack for some predator. This is very stressful for them. Try to never let your bird feel like it is all alone. Provide it sounds that it knows are the normal sounds of your home so that it can relax and feel safe even when it does not see you.

:irn: Indeed! Little everyday living noises make him very comfortable; but the same actually goes for me. The only types of noises we avoid are video games & movies at night if we're awake - but instead I set some rain / jungle sounds. Silence does indeed signal that something is wrong like that. While this in itself is a bad example it does extend to us humans at times too: for example, it's an entertainment industry element as well. How many times have we heard the main character in a book or a movie say "It's quiet. Too quiet." And it always signals some form of doom and gloom.

I myself can't sleep either if the house is silent like that, and I dare say there are a lot of others out there sharing this trait, human and parrot  On the very few occasions that we do exit the house we never ever leave it silent, and put on some nice jazz or rain sounds. Even when we will get his buddy, we'll probably continue to put on some rain sounds and what not, to keep the house sounding "alive".

@ParrotsForLife : your house being silent is probably not an issue if you have more than one parrot / other animals in your home making a bit of living sounds!

But I do swear by smooth jazz and rain sounds myself  My two boys (gosh I do love calling them that!) Simo and the husband, like it too. I'm always researching ways to make little Simo happy and comfy!

I have enough trouble sleeping as it is but I know from living in cities, rural areas, small towns and even in wilderness areas that it takes me some time to get accustomed to what are the normal sounds in the area and if from that point the noise level or type changes, I wake up on high alert. It could be the noise of a car passing when that is not normal, the sound of people or even the silence where it is not normal that wakes me. Once we are accustomed to the sounds of life around us it is the changes or lack of these sounds that prevent us from sleeping or resting properly even if we do sleep.

I have Tintinitus (?) and have to have something to listen to or I could go nuts with it. I sleep with the TV on. I do believe that all my kids like noise. They make enough of it. None seem to have trouble sleeping with noise in the house.

My house is never silent at night, but I grew up beside a busy road in Edmonton, so it doesnt bother me to have some noise, The ones I hear the most are the fridge, and the humidifier. in the winter I hear the heat change and in the summer I hear the air conditioner. As far as i can tell, my parrots have adjusted to the sounds they hear. The only time I ever heard complete silence is in an isolation tank and it kind of bothered me, but I stuck it out untill the end. Wont do it again though....

Most of the noise in my house is caused by Rambo and Myrtle. As if they are not noisy enough they will cause others to make noise. Aunt Betty is a screamer and will scream for any reason. I have told her that those two pick on her just to make her scream. Rambo used to hide behind the toilet then jump out to make her scream. Myrtle pulls her hair as she flies by to make Aunt Betty scream. I have told her that they do it just to make her scream and that they would get board and stop if she would just stop screaming.
Aunt Betty is a stubborn old woman who will always do just the opposite of what I tell her.
