Ohhh, so sorry about Maui passing! She was gorgeous! That picture looks as if somebody colored her like that on purpose!

I would not worry too much about Irwin's weight, John. I once took in a lovebird which had been starved (his mate had also died from it] and he was always way too skinny for the rest of his life. Starvation does something to their internal organs and even when you feed them regularly, they never quite 'come back'... (he had also been left with a serious neurological problem from it]. Give him millet instead of sunflowers - and white bread - and wheat grass (grow it yourself in a little tray in his cage, if you can].

He always has millet. He will only eath the golden millet I get from MY Safe Bird Store. He doesn't touch the brown millet I can get in a pet store locally.

It's also good information about the weight. I didn't know that they had trouble regaining it once they were near starvation. We have a few others at the rescue that are severely underweight. We have had some bounce back nicely, though.

Well, I would assume that it depends on the health of the bird when the starvation started, the kind of diet it has naturally (the more specialized, the more they suffer, I would assume] and the actual degree and length of the whole thing. I know that by the time the body is emaciated, it has already started eating itself and that means not only fat, flesh and muscles but also internal organs... I only have a single bird as experience so it might not happen to all of them but I know it happens to some.

I guess that would support my assumption that the more specialized the diet, the more their bodies suffer. Poor things! Life in captivity is already hard on them because of the difficulty of their diet and, on top of that, they have to deal with the consequences of starvation... Please be extra careful who adopts them because it will need to be somebody who is knowledgeable, willing AND able to provide an extra good diet for them.

People looking for lorries are usually lory people, if that makes sense. They really are sweet, beautiful birds. I suppose if you just had one or two the liquid poop wouldn't be as hard to deal with.

Well, you can't go by me because poop means nothing to me. My birds poop all over my furniture, especially the back of the chairs because their tops is a favorite place for the little ones to perch. And, taking into consideration that my dining room set has double press back oak chairs with intricate carvings, you can well imagine how hard it is to clean them but I have it down to an art! I spray them with glass cleaner, let it set for a minute or two, go over the carvings with an old toothbrush, wipe them clean with a damp cloth - let it dry,, go over them with the lemon oil wood cleaner and voila! Clean chairs [for a few hours  ]

I cover everything. Sheets on the furniture and pillow cases on the dining room chairs.

I have newspaper on top of the TVs. There is one inside door that I have to scrub often.

I do have thick transparent plastic covers for the horizontal surfaces like all the tables and the dining room credenza but my husband doesn't like the house to look 'like a shelter' ["This is a FAMILY HOUSE, not an animal shelter!!"]. If it was up to me, I would eliminate the living room completely and just use it as a bird room (better for the birds and less work for me!] but Robert puts up with a lot from me and my animals so I compromise and just clean more.
