Outside Time for some natural sunlight

Postby seagoatdeb » Mon Apr 18, 2016 8:00 pm

Sunny and Gaugan enjoying some nice outside time today in their outside cages. 28C here in Kelowna, BC Canada today. Gaugan is so happy that there are all new toys she is playing like a little wild girl....lol. Sunny was playing but Gaugan is so wild right now he is watching her....lol....havent hooked up the air conditioner yet so it was nice on the balcony on the north side of the house, much cooler than inside. We are more north west than north so just a little sun was dappled through the trees. So they got a nice amount of sunshine too.

Thanks wolf, Gaugan loves anyway of being outside. For Sunny, it has been a slow process since he was such a fearfull parrot when I first got him. He really is a very sweet parrot, he never holds a grudge and its so nice to see him becoming more confident and secure all the time.

Rambo climbs into a tiny cage so I can hang it on a nail and he watch me and yell hello to anything that moves when I am tending to the horses. Some times I find him in the little cage at other times of the day. It is like he is telling me he wants back outside.

We are also having very mild weather around here, too. I would love to be able to take all my birds outside but it's pretty hard right now so I dream of building an outdoor aviary right outside their room with a sliding door in between...

Yes, and it would be a very simple project because the birdroom has two windows, one on the side of the house and one facing the backyard - and this one actually 'goes' onto the roof of the kitchen (which was renovated and enlarged so it 'sticks out' the back) and it would be just a matter of closing this 'patio' all around, putting tiles on it and changing the window to a sliding door. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to convince my husband because we are moving back home in 5 - 6 years and all the improvements to the house are meant to make it easier to sell it or increase it's value and how many people do you think would buy a house with a large aviary built off the second bedroom? BUT that doesn't mean that I am still not trying to convince my husband! I've been thinking that maybe something can be done that will make it so the 'walls' of the aviary can be easily taken down leaving just a nice outdoor patio/VERY large balcony which can be used by humans - kind of like a deck.

Its going to be even hotter today, my poor garden, all the spring veggies wil go to seed too fast with summer weather in the spring. The weather map shows a heat wave for at least a week. But my parrots are just going to be happy to be able to be outside more, the weather is perfect for them.

Climate change is wrecking havoc on the gardens and farming. My azalea died because we had a long Indian summer in December so it started to grow buds all over just to get super cold weather immediately after which killed them all. I was real worried about my forsythia and rose bush because the same thing happened to them but they both survived...

My carrots would not grow last year, until the numerous heat waves we had were over and so 2 months after they planted they started to grow, and we had some very late carrots. We had some days that hit the 40C last summer and although that does happen here, too many heat waves is devestating on all but the natural plants for the area. The dandelions do fine. So i always have some coming up for greens and roots for tea. The only plants I had last year that coud take that heat, were the sweet potatoes, the tomatoes, the peppers and some of the brassicas, Collards, Kale, etc. The rest of my garden was less sparse than the year before.

WE dont get snow much here, even though it can get cold some days in the winter because we are not humid, and if it snows, it will sublimate, on cold days, so there is no waiting for melting. This year it never went much below 0C in the winter but the humdity was high and the snow stayed for 3 weeks. The trend has been warmer than usual for us here. I live in a dessert area in Canada, but we do have access to water, being so far north and having mountain ranges with glaciers, not too far away.

The parrots are gong to have a lot more outside time, so they will love it. I have ordered Gaugan an aviator harness. The harness i had for her for years, she never liked, but i think she will like that harness, it looks more comfortable and less restrictive. There are perfect days right now to take her out for walks with me if i can have her secure. Sunny can watch us out the window for a while before I would even think of attempting a harness on him. he is cautious of new things and Gaugan is excited about new things. he learns a lot by watching Gaugan do it first. They both allow me to touch them anywhere, so hopefully that harness, will be easy to put on.
