Parrot Sleep

How many hours of sleep do your parrots get? How many hours of sleep makes your bird groggy and aggressive (ex 12 hours good, 8 hours nasty, etc)? Do you vary their night sleep hours seasonally or do they sleep the same duration year round? When you come in the morning are the birds already awake or do you find yourself waking them up?

They go to bed around 8 or 9pm and get up around 6h20am on the week-end.
However, they might sleep during the day but I can't really tell. I'm assuming they do.

Piper and Zuri are always ready to go when I let them out in the morning.
Joey takes a minute or two after I uncover him to be himself.
Petey and specially Shade take a bit longer to fully get awake.

I work midnights so my bird's sleep schedule stays with mine. We get up around 4 or 5pm and get our "breakfast" then they have their out time, which depends on what i'm doing. If i'm home they are usually out. Both if their houses have play tops so I just open the cage and they can get out/in whenever they want.
We go to bed around 4 or 4am. They usually get 10 or so hours of sleep. If I get up early for some reason I usually let them sleep until their normal wake up time comes around.
I've been out of work on sick leave for 2 months for depression/anxiety issues.
I go back to work on Tuesday so I'm trying to decide how to adjust out schedules. My husband work evenings so he usually goes to be around 4am.
Hopefully I can get him to put the birds to bed so their schedules aren't changed much!
They don't seem to mind having the late schedules since they get their normal amount of sleeps!

I always cover the bird for the night and she'll normally go to sleep with sunset, whenever that is. The morning is a bit more difficult because we cannot let the bird to awaken with sunrise - she always greets the morning with a screaming session and in the summer that would be at about 5 am.
So we leave her covered until we get up. At the weekends we sleep in and then it is a bit inconvenient for her to stay under cover but she stays reasonably silent.

I know that she normally takes a couple of shorter naps during the day maybe 2 or 3 times half an hour.

Do your birds wake you up when you would like to still sleep in?

During the work week Mojo stays on his perch in the living room until about 10pm (he usually preens or snoozes between 9 and 10 pm on his perch). Then I will take him to his cage and cover him. Around 7am he gets his breakfast. I'm not sure if he sleeps during the day but I'm assuming he does. He usually gets only 8 or so hours of sleep during the week but on weekends he will get around 12. The days he gets 12 hours of sleep he seems to be in a better mood generally, just like me .

Thankfully Mojo is very well behaved in the mornings. He'll stay quiet until he hears me moving around in the house or hears my husband and I talking. I'm VERY thankful he doesn't greet the sun when it comes up!

Jasmine sleeps with me in my bed. I keep fresh newspaper along side the bed & during the night, she'll whine if she needs to go. I'll reach under the covers for her then hold her over the papers & we go back to sleep. I've grown up sleeping w/ a cat so I'm used to having a little thing with me. She'll either sleep in my arms or under the covers down by my feet. She'll stay in bed as long as I do.

Petey sleeps in his cage. If it's the weekend, I'll cover his cage & he'll stay quite until about 10!

I don't see changes of getting grumpy/cranky if they stay up later than normal. Petey will go into or on top of his cage when tired. Jasmine around 9 each night typically heads into the bathroom, climbs up the drawers to sit on the counter & be by herself in the dark. That's her "private alone time"...

The hyacinths chill out around 9:30... They'll stay quiet in the morning until there is bright daylight.. They're cages are HUGE & would be hard to cover, so I just keep shades drawn so the morning calls are kept at bay until 8:30.

You aren't nervous that you might one day roll on her?

Not at all. She's not little like a conure or other small parrot... And, I'm a petite person.. 5 feet tall & 100 lbs... If I started to roll on her, she'd either quickly squawk or I'd feel something in my way & stop. She typically starts out in my arms for kisses & then moves down by my feet. She will straddle by ankle & lay ontop of my foot or lay with her head resting on my leg. Very sweet...

None of the others birds I could sleep with.. Jasmine has been doing so since she first came home to me & has grown up with it. She does fine when I'm on vacation & she has to sleep in a cage alone.

I'm sure everyone had a little bit of difficulty who had to transition their birds a little recently during daylight savings time change! To birds, it's just confusing. Especially if they know a pattern.

I think I had a harder time than my birds..

Near the end of last winter I got a sun lamp for my Jasmine (cockatoo). She loves it!!! It's on a timer that turns it on for 2 hours at a time w/ an hour off from 10am-8pm. Her feathers have looked the best since I've had her... Fingers crossed it makes a difference throughout this winter!
