UV Bulbs?

Postby Trick or 'Tiel » Thu Jun 01, 2017 7:47 pm

I often come across places that say birds need access to direct sunlight outdoors. I'm currently trying to train Ducky to wear a harness, but in the meantime he and Bluebell both hate their travel carriers and can't go outside. I've seen in a lot of places these UV bulbs for birds that provide the same benefit as natural sunlight. Does anybody use these and are they a good substitute for natural sunlight? How to use them and how long to leave them with it? I'm not an expert on bird lighting and solar schedules as many people often mention, so any additional information would be appreciated.

Quite a few of us do. Mine is on a timer so they will get the exact time on and off.

I don't remember exactly what the bulbs are. Someone will come on with the info. I need to order new ones.

Just natural light for mine, if uv lights arent used correctly they can cause nasty burns.

Sunshine travels a distance. So does the light from a lamp. It should not be too near the bird that it causes burns. I would have put it in the rooms light fixture but I don't trust myself to remember to turn it on and off. I have a two bulb stand up lamp on a timer.

Any tips or recommendations on how to use them, or if I should use them?
