Talking to your Parrot?

Postby Titanius » Sat Apr 24, 2010 8:31 pm

I've always heard that talking to your Parrot in a soothing voice calms them down. So many questions come to mind when I think of trying it. Here are a few...Like what do you say? Should you be speaking very high or normal? What if your voice isn't as high pitched and is somewhat deeper does the bird still respond just as well? Have any of you guys tried this?

My Quaker, Abi, can get pretty noisy and I generally let her run her course. However if it's late or we have company, I stand near her cage and speak softly to her.
"Abigail. What are you doing? You need to calm down, sweet bird."
I like to use long sentences to get her attention and intersperse words that she will repeat, i.e. "Abigail" and "sweet bird". She usually figures it out pretty fast and I'll reward her with a treat. It doesn't always work out, but she's still learning and so am I :D

It really doesn't matter what you say.

The tone is what matters. Although if you want your bird to learn nice words, you better watch what you say !

I don't think it really matters what you say to them. I talk to Lucy and Jessie all the time. When no one is in the house you should hear what I tell them ;) I sing to them and even dance for them ... Jessie thinks its hilarious and starts laughing while he runs across the top of his cage and starts dancing with me.

I also don't think what you say really counts.

But how you say it does.

I talk to my birds all the time. My boyfriend has got use to it by now, but I'm sure in the beginning he might have found it weird, although he always said it was nice to see how much I cared for my birds.

Anyways, I use an excited voice when I greet them or want them to be active. When wanting to calm down a bird that needs it (having been scared or something similar), I use a soothing voice. When they do something bad, I use a firm voice.

Really, I guess it's like when talking to kids in different situations :)

I agree that it's primarily tone...but I do think using words that animals are familiar with - in a positive connotation - is helpful...

...like their names, 'good', etc...

I talk quietly and in a calm voice to my birds when they are in their cage or on me and what I find is they will sit on my shoulder and also talk away in a nice and calm voice back to me.
