How to properly clip wings?

Postby DUHK » Thu Apr 29, 2010 12:05 am

Hi guys! I am new to the bird community and was seeking some advice from personal experiences.

I hear from some people that you should clip the primary wings and leave the first two. Some say that you should clip the first 6 of the primaries.

I don't know which one is more correct. From experience, what do you suggest I do?

I want to get a budgie. I don't have one yet but that's because I want to get all the information I can get before diving in.

Thanks!! :)

Hi,

Well, first off I will tell you that leaving a bird flighted is doable if you are careful and take extra steps to keep the bird safe. Having their wings is healthy both physically and mentally for the bird. If you can't leave the bird flighted then clipping is the way to go.

First of all, never leave the first one or two feathers intact if you are going to clip. That is called a show clip and it is done purely for aesthetic reasons. It is actually dangerous for the bird as the feathers that are left jut out and there is a space where the other wings are clipped. This allows the outer to feathers to easily get caught in cage bars or toys etc. Also, the feathers lose the support of the other feathers and can more easily break.

Different birds require a different amount of feathers to be cut. Never go past seven. For most birds 4 or 5 will suffice. For a small bird like a budgie you may have to go to 6 or 7 but always start out with less. You can always cut more if you need to but you can't put them back if you cut too much. I'd start with 4 on a budgie and then see how he does. He should glide downward towards the ground. He should still be able to fly a bit as well. The idea is that he can't get any lift. If a bird falls immediately to the ground then they are clipped too severely.

Another important factor is you must allow a baby bird to fully fledge before clipping their wings. That means they should be allowed plenty of time to learn to fly, at least a week or so. It is extremely important for their mental and physical development that they be allowed to fledge.

Here is an article that shows how to clip. http://www.birdsnways.com/wisdom/ww19eii.htm

Hope this has helped.

Thanks guys! I hope I can find someone with more experience to do it the first time for me, but all information has been helpful :)

I saw a lot of videos where people don't leave the two first one's, which is confirmed by what you said.

The poor bird in the video looked like he just fell to the ground to me. O_O

Good luck! If there is an Avian Vet in Houston you can usually get a wing clipping for not too much money. Also, I'm not sure how far you are from College Station, but they have a Veterinarian program and do work with birds so you might be able to go there for cheap.

(just so you know though, it's really easy to do once you know what you are doing)

Ahh! Sorry if this is off topic, but that's the program I want to get into. :)

I will look into the vet clinic. Thanks for all your help!

It is more correct not to clip them at all.

So by that do you mean clip only the first 6 primaries and leave the rest? Or clip some of the primaries and leave the first two >.< I don't quite understand what you mean by not all of them.

I had a budgie before who died named Duke. He was very clipped from the store, but he could still glide down to the floor. Birds who are more bulky have a more difficult time with clipping.

Watch out. One of my tiels arrived with her wings clipped like in that video. She could still fly but couldn't stall. It was very dangerous for the bird and I had to clip further to stop her crashing fast on the walls as she couldn't turn and avoid them.

In that video what are actually being clipped are the turn and stall feathers. Not the lift feathers like the bloke says.

I prefer not to clip. But if you have to then you must clip at least the first 3 primary feathers. Be careful not to cut too short as it could become uncomfortable for the bird. And watch out for blood feathers!

Here is a much better video:
