Kili Showering From Water Bottle

Postby Michael » Thu Apr 29, 2010 8:29 pm

I've suspected her of doing this for a while now (hearing the bottle ball clicking repeatedly) but now I got the evidence!

Kili was showering from her water bottle so I figured she could use a real shower. I showered her in the bathroom and put her back into the cage to dry. She ran right back to her bottle and continued her own games. She really seems to be enjoying it.

The good news is the water flows fairly slowly and she has never come close to draining the bottle. She'd probably have to go at it all day before the bottle gets empty. Even after all this play, not more than 1/8th of the bottle was drained. So for this reason I can continue confidently using the Lixit water bottles and recommending them to other parrot owners. This is far better than a parrot that took a dunk in its water bowl in the morning and then continued drinking that all day long. The water coming out of the bottle is always clean and I normally change it daily. I highly recommend the glass Lixit bottles over any of the other plastic ones.

Wow thats really cool. I used to think those water bottles were reserved only for hamsters and pets of the like. Does it work just as well for smaller parrots ?

I know a lot of puppy mills use water bottles for smaller dogs rather than water dishes.

I have just a regular superpet bottle and yes- glass, chew proof is the only way to go. ESPECIALLY with parrots. Mine is actually secured on the inside of the cage so I have to make sure its very very secure, otherwise my bird could probably knock it down and if the glass breaks, or it hits her when it's falling or something :\ ... yeah.

If this one ever breaks I'll probably invest in a lixit, because I really like how secure it looks, and that it hooks up on the outside of the cage, preventing injury to the bird.

And Kili is adorable. She reminds me so much of my girl haha.

Just get the Lixit. It's $26 and well worth it. I've probably gone through $50 worth of other bottles prior to it. Haven't had to buy a different one since. Get the 5/8" tip for Senegal Parrot.

Our conures bath at least 2 times a day and sometimes more. They make an absolute mess in the house . . still not sure how to manage this. Soon as the paper on the bottom of the cage is wet I have to change it because it smells. Thats a min of two paper changes. I have a feeling they are training me :(

I would love to use a water bottle like you have for kili but they recommend having a bath in the cage for Green Cheeks.

Great Video BTW Michael. The whole family sits down to watch your videos! Its really funny. Thomas my son refers to your Videos as another Kili Episode!

Cheers

I have The Bird Butler and it rocks. http://birdsetc.com/ then click on the bird butler link on the left. I know many breeders say they won't use anything else after using this one. The tip is made so that the bird can't stuff food up into it. I know a lady who lost a caique because it couldn't access water for too long. The whole time she thought the water bottle was full but the bird had stuffed food up into the tip and couldn't get any water out.

I've never seen Kili even try to moiston her pellets. She was always accustomed to eating them dry as she had been weened on them early as a baby. She just eats all her pellets and then goes drinks a lot of water afterwards. So at least for me that one is not a concern.

That's cool Kili :)

It just shows how resourceful she is, what a clever bird!

I am planning to get a water bottle for Jazz too, mainly so that she gets used to it and it will be easier for her to drink when I take her on my travels....

I made this video to show everyone how great water bottles can be but don't expect it to stop them from splashing everything anyway!
