Half moon conure problem? help.

Postby xXMissEuphoriaXx » Fri May 21, 2010 9:51 pm

i got a new conure from an owner who surely neglected it , it has no tail feathers due to the conure being in a cage too small for him . Ok here's the deal i got him into his new "home" and all he does is stick upside down to the roof of the cage moving around throughout all the corners of the squared cage spending hours like this, is this stress? i need help please. :?

Hi,

This certainly sounds like stress. I assume he's in a bigger cage now? I think all you can do for him immediately is talk quietly to him and let him know that you won't hurt him. It will take him some time to adjust and figure out that you mean him no harm. Will he step up for you or is he handleable at all?

yes he is in a bigger cage now. i talked to him and my sister too saying to him "hola" that means hello in spanish, that seem to soothed him a little... right now he is just on it's perch watching us in the living room. And no he isn't tamed the owner told me that he handfed the conure but that he stop handling it and got a bit nippy the conure is 2 years old.

How is the cage situated? If he seems nervous you might want to be sure it is against a wall on one side and that he has a hidey hole like a tent or nest box.

Especially because the bird is coming from a different household and is really stressed. The bird is more likely to transmit or receive an illness in its present condition. Even breeders from very reputable aviaries with no illness in their birds, still recommend 1 month quarantine for any parrot added to a household both for its sake and the existing parrots.

Just keep a close eye on all the birds to make sure no one gets sick. Monitor their weights daily and contact a vet in case of any abnormalities.
