Strange sounds while I am petting my Senegal + Music

Postby Alexander » Wed May 26, 2010 4:31 am

Hello!
As the title suggests, sometimes when I pet my Senegal parrot he makes some very strange, but cute sounds which make him sound like a guinea pig. He also opens and closes his beak very fast as if he is chewing, but he is not. What does it mean? Is this because he is enjoying it or because of discomfort?

Also, he seems to really like listening to me playing the piano. I let him sit on a chair next to me and he sits so quietly and sometimes he even closes his eyes and just stands there enjoying the sounds! He is so cute! :)

How old is your baby again? I'm no breeder, but this appears to me like he might make "hungry" sounds and the open and closing of the beak quickly might be that he wants to be fed?

He is 4 months old. He did it again today, but he had just been fed so I think it is not highly probable that he was hungry. I found two videos on youtube where you can see what I am describing. The one has the sound that he makes (approximately) and the other the way he opens and closes his beak.

I'm not sure what the sound is but Kili purrs and clicks her beak when she is happy/excited. So that is usually a good sign. I'll have to try to catch a video when she gets really really happy and does that. Trouble is I usually don't know ahead of time till she is like that.

When she clicks her beak I'll click my teeth back at her and she'll get even happier and click her beak some more (or I initiate it). It's a way Senegals show contentment. And they purr when you pet them in a way they enjoy.

I can't watch the youtube videos from work, but based on what Michael said, I know that Jessie and Lucy do the clicking noise all the time and its always a sign that they are happy. Jessie also purrs when he's cuddling with me - almost sounds like a cat purring.
