Do you use water bottle or dish?

Postby Michael » Thu May 27, 2010 11:23 pm

As the result of a discussion about water bottles in another topic, I realized that I don't know what most people here use. So please vote in the poll and let us know why you use a water bottle or a dish. Let us know why you don't use the opposite of what you use. What could convince you to switch or are you dead set on what you use? For bottle users, are there any features/alterations you wish the manufacturers would incorporate?

my Ringnecks had both. when i got them from the breeder all they had was a bottle.
knowing how much they love to dip their foods and bathe i got them a big water dish too.
it was all purpose and i had to change it frequently, it always had something in it.
they still drank from their bottle though.

Marnie just has a dish.

I have water dishes for my bird and don't intend on getting a bottle.
Most of them don't dunk their foods; in fact, it's mostly just Zuri who does it, but I've since moved his food bowl far away from the water bowl so there is barely anything dunked these days. I change their water frequently as well. My other occasional dunker is Joey and it's not with food; he likes to "wash" some of his toys before he plays with them, although it's far from being a constant thing.

I have water dishes ... I change their water several times a day because mine are dunkers.

I've tried moving their water dishes to the other side of the cage and it works for Jessie because he eats right over his food bowl. But Lucy is a funny little character. When she's eating pellets, she grabs a pellet, dunks it into her water and then goes up the highest perch to eat it. She always grabs her food and heads for the highest perch. When I moved her water bowl to the other side of her cage, she grabbed her pellet, walked over to her water bowl and then went up to the highest perch. I don't think I'll ever have a weight issue with her, because she gets a work out every time she eats ... sometimes I wonder if she burns more calories than she's eating ;o)

I have both right now, I'd like to get Scooter using the bottle, but I've never seen him do so. The water level did go down the first time I filled it, but this second fill has not and I don't know how to encourage him to use it. Is there a thread on that somewhere?

I'd like to use a bottle simply because it keeps the water cleaner. I'll have to wait until I can get a good quality bottle though, the stores around here only carry the plastic ones. I'm curious to see how he'll take to it.

MandyG, I'm not sure if you have a PetSmart near you .... but I saw the Lixit glass bottles there in 2 different sizes just the other day. I'm considering picking them up for my 2 ... I might try to transition them over when we're on holidays over the summer.

I have to travel just over 3 hours east or west to get to a PetSmart! I'm planning on going to one in the next couple of weeks so I'll definitely look for a Lixit one when I go. Thanks!
