My New Parrotlet arrived today! Do you think he'll be okay?

Postby pabeth » Fri Jun 18, 2010 8:49 pm

Today, I picked up my new parrotlet baby boy. He is supposed to be hatched early april, but I think he's maybe a little older. I HOPE and PRAY that he will be healthy and happy. He was fed apples and seed mix at the breeder. I bought him some seed and am going to switch him over to pellet (not zupreem, but extreme? Something starting with ex- ).

I am super nervous. He was on a flight for 5 hours from LA with a little buddy who was also being shipped from the same breeder. When he arrived, I was surprised that they had NO water! I gave them some water, and they drank it down. The one he came with was way younger and I was able to remove him to put in a carrier for the lady who bought him. Mine was flying around like a wild beast, he's supposed to be handfed, but he acts like he's never seen a human before. He has bitten me a lot, I try not to handle him, but I had to get him into the carrier to take home, then I weighted him, and now he's napping.

I don't know if this is a good sign or bad:
he was smooshed to the far end of the cage (away from me), but now has worked his way onto my side of the cage. He's napping HOWEVER, he's fluffy and tucking his head in his wing..... After my last baby died, I am stressed out that this one might too. Following what the vet said, I went ahead and put some OTC antibiotic in his drinking water. She said it probably won't help too much, but it can't hurt either. I am also probably going to get some yogart tomorrow, since she said that can help with digestion.

OH I HOPE I HOPE he is okay. I know that the traveling was brutal for him. Even when I fly into denver from vacation, the altitude gives me a huge headache, so maybe he has one too. I am not sure.

He doesnt' have a name yet... maybe Andy, Charlie, Cricket (which seems girlie), Lucky, Ollie. THose are the ones i have thought of.

Hey, I hope he does fine! He's probably just stressed out, but if you are really worried, can you take him for a vet checkup?

Hi,

Don't use the OTC antibiotics! Every vet I've ever talked to and every parrot expert agree that the OTC antibiotics are harmful. It sounds like he is stressed from the trip. Maybe just allowing him to get used to his new home in peace for a few days will be all he needs.

Pet Store Health Products

Just in case you’re wondering about those pet
store products
Vitamins or medicines to add to a bird’s water?

When it comes to parrots
(any bird with a hooked bill)

--Never use them –

These products can put your bird off their water,
leading to dehydration and multiple associated
health risks.

As for the antibiotics, they don’t work, have not
been known to work for many years (which is why
they’re available over the counter) and they aren’t
about to start working anytime in the future.

What they will do, however, is kill the good bacteria
in your bird’s system. The bacteria that supports a
healthy immune system.

They may also strengthen the bad bacteria in your
bird as bacteria develop resistance very quickly

When your bird really needs an antibiotic it may be
difficult to find one that works.
Using these products can hurt your bird not only
immediately, but most certainly in the long run
.

But they are really bad for your baby! Please don't give him anymore. They are harmful... I promise I wouldn't give you bad advice.
