Beaner flew away.....

Postby Marnie » Tue Jun 22, 2010 6:15 pm

the weather has been so nice lately that the budgie cage was hanging in my big maple tree so they could enjoy the great outdoors.
today i went out to take care of them to find only one bird in the cage!!!!
my little green one is gone! no doors were left open nor have i ever seen them even try to open a door.
i have been extra careful lately too because i accidently left one up a few inches last week. it didn't go back down but got caught on a millet clip instead. (they both could have left then,)
i have very diligent since then to be sure the doors are closed all the way. the dish doors are slide up type so he had to have lifted it up high enough to escape.
i am still in shock and feel terrible wondering what will become of him. i know he will probably starve but if he manages to survive, the winter will do him in. i had to bring the cage in today due to thunderstorms. so now Petey is all alone and missing his buddy very much.
i keep looking and listening outside for him but no sightings.
this just was not supposed to happen.

he is fully flighted and not hand tame. even if he did come back i wouldn't be able to catch him.
i do have another very small cage i could
put Petey in so i could leave their cage out there tomorrow with the door open.
there's a slim chance he would come back for food and that i could get the door closed before he flew back out again.
i really would have thought he wouldn't stray too far from his little buddy and food source.
it would be a miracle for him to show up again.
i am at work though from 2pm-10pm so i can't even watch for him.
he must love being free of the cage to really be a bird for the only time in his life

Try to keep the cage where he can get to it and keep the other budgie in it. Maybe his calls will attract Beaner, especially if they are bonded. Bonded birds don't stray too far from each other and remain in contact call range. I hope you find him.

Thats hard! I'm with pchela. Keep the cage outside whenever you can. Maybe he will come back when he hears his buddy.
I'm so sorry.
