Arabic Gum

Postby Kim S » Mon Jul 12, 2010 9:17 am

Has anyone tried arabic gum before? It is really difficult to obtain in Holland. It is mainly used in arts and crafts so the regular gum isnt 'clean' enough to be used as foodsuplement. But I finally found an address that imports the real stuff for parrots.
I ordered a kilo for 25 euros. That would be 2.20 pound for 31.43 dollar.
Anyway I was wondering if some of you use it and how. I cant seem to get the hang of it. You're suppose to mix it with water and it becomes some kind of glue. This you can mix with nuts, fruits or seeds and put it all in a plastic container (parrotproof). Let it dry for 24 hours and it becomes a very hard mass. The birds will have hours of finnicking around.

I'll try to post some pictures later, but first let me try to get it right

(Since this could be posted in multiple catagories I decided to put it here. Please feel free to move it to another area on the forum.)

I've never heard of it but it sounds interesting. You'll have to let us know how it turns out.

Funny, couldnt find it on the internet either. It is harvested from the acacia tree. For more detailed info on the gum and such see wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gum_arabic
It is used in popular drinks like coca cola and pepsi I believe. But is also used a lot in liquorice.
Like I said, when you wet the powder it becomes a sort of glue. You can make all kinds of treat-toys for your parrot.
I was tipped by somebody from my parakeetclub. He trains parrots (and birds of prey, smal wild animals and such) for educational shows. He did a lot of study into animal behavior (even in america) and is a big enrichment enthousiast. He told me I should look into this as being a really fun and natural way to make my parrot work for his food.
Even smaller kinds of parrots can enjoy it. He told me to dip a string of millet into the sollution. It would take the birds hours to pick it clean.

Here's an account of my latest try:

What you need:
Powdered Aracic gom
Seed mix
Water
A cup and a spoon
A parrotproof holder
Image

Step one, put about two tablespoons of powder in the cup.
Image

Step two, add water. The more water the longer it takes the gum to dry.
Image

Step three, Mix. You see I used luke warm water and I have lumps… The warmer the water, the smoother the mix.
Image

Step four, mix in the seeds.
Image

Step five, keep mixing. The more seeds you add the better the gum will dry.
Image

Step six, this is where it gets really messy. Make toys! Like stuffing a barrel of fun with it.

Or a pine cone (a bought seed stuffed parrot toy that was eaten clean)

I LOVE this idea! I'm going to have to see if I can find some Arabic Gum! I have a feeling it is going to be difficult to find.

A quick search turned up this. http://www.amazon.com/New-Age-Arabic-Gu ... B000WSAR8K

I'll have to search some more to find the best price etc. I wonder if I can order pine cones anywhere?

FYI I typed Arabic gum in the search on the web page. It costs $35.00 Canadian for one pound of powder (454 gm) and there are other alternatives listed too...

Just be carefull you get the right type of gum. It is used for modeling and other arts and crafts as well, but that kind is not clean enough to be used as food.
In case you cant find it anywhere, maybe its a fun idea to look at shippingcosts from europe to america. Maybe I can send you some?

The one I mentioned Golda's Kitchen is ALL food safe, none of it is for arts and crafts.
