Anyone else's bird do this?

Postby SuperSponge » Fri Jul 23, 2010 6:44 pm

I have a Senegal parrot and maybe you guys can tell me if anyone else's bird does this.

Once in a while she will grab the bars of her cage with her beak and one foot and kick the other foot back REPEATEDLY. She just keeps kicking! I can't figure out what she's doing! She just does this once in a while, no big deal, then goes back to what she's doing. My mom raised birds as a kid and says it doesn't look like anything is wrong with her, but she doesn't know what she's doing either. Anyone??

Yeah, I've had her for 7 and she only started doing this a few months ago. Again, there doesn't seem to be anything WRONG with her, so I'm not worried, but I am curious.

I am planning on taking her to the vet soon for a regular check up, so maybe I'll ask then.

...good idea to have it checked out...

I have a horse with a knee-cap (stifle) issue...he does that when the knee-cap gets 'stuck'...

Sounds like a behavior that all African Greys I've ever met engage in. Is it similar to a bull who is stamping his front hoof over and over? Do you know what I mean? The grey will grab a bar with his beak and just sit there and kick that foot over and over again.

Yeah, but does that like.....show dominance? Or something like that? I mean I understand the analogy, but is there a reason for it?

It's a breeding behavior and they only do it when they are hormonal. They are 'scratching' the floor of the nest to make it more hollow and clean off the 'debris' produced by the chewing and scratching they use to enlarge and prepare the cavity.
